I hope she brought a chaprone. My friends would have never left me alone with their little sister's when I was your age, with or without my camera. But then what they didn't know couldn't hurt them could it. The camera open a lot of doors 35 years ago.

Goofing around with your friend's little sister, huh? Brave man.

Looks like a nice shot to me, but I've never done anything like this either. I like the lighting and pose, and I think the white on white looks good too. Well done.

Is that tread marks on her shirt or is she wearing....oh, nevermind.

    I'm done, don't worry.

Seriously though, what is that on her shirt? Is there really something there, or is that some sort of digital artifact? I don't think it detracts from the photo. I'm just curious.

    Thanks,

Sorry. It's slight moire, her tank top was ribbed like corduroy. That coupled with sharpening created that pattern.

I suspected it was something like that, but I didn't know the term. I'm new to digital. At least, that's my excuse. Thanks for the lesson.

No problem. It's not just a digital thing though, this would also show up on a film scan if the conditions were right. It's just how some patterns behave.

Native americans are very atrractive looking feature wise for the most part. That may explain why Katie and her sister have very strong facial features that are easy on the eyes to me. But they don't hold a candle to that woman you live with hahaha

Hey everyone, Sebastian has beautiful people as friends, though he isn't that good looking himself

It'd be neat to see her fooling around maybe with a fan(beautiful hair) and just having fun dancing around...what a cutie---but still a little reserved and shy---great personality shot.

    Nat,

You nailed her personality, I'm glad you were able to read that from the image. This actually was with a fan, though I had it turned down pretty low to only slightly move the hair

I think the lighting is great on this photo, and the pose looks fun and relaxed. The only thing I would say could improve this photo is to not cut off her feet. This pic makes me sure wish I had studio lights too. Good job on this one.

Thanks Ray. No need for studio lights, same thing could be done with a 550ex and an umbrella.

I generally don't photograph people at all (I could butcher a supermodel with a camera) but I have read that cutting the subject off at the knees is a bad thing. This shot looks like it goes down to just above the ankles. Is there a guideline or most common practice on that?

Excellent shot BTW. She really does look like she is enjoying herself.

Really? I've got the 550EX...and getting an umbrella wouldn't be a problem. How did you set up this particular photo using the umbrella and flash?

Re: Something very new to me - Katie

I didn't use the 550 for this shot, but I did use it for the first photo in my Houston, TX, thread further down. You just need a light stand, a bogen umbrella adapter and a way to trigger the flash, either with the Off-Camera Shoe Cord or a wireless trigger. I use a cheap eBay wireless one. If you go the wireless route you have to meter manually, in which case you need a flash meter for best results. You can use the 550's IR if you have another flash to trigger, or you can use the off-camera cord, but that will generally be tough because it doesn't stretch very long.

If I recall, don't crop(chop) at joints like knees, ankles, or wrist. Crop(chop) between joints like midway of thigh or forearm. This shot is cropped between ankle and knee so it is fine.

Sebastian couldn't care less about this rule but the man doesn't have to since he never posts bad shots....HE TRANSENDS the rules...take that as a compliment

I like the shot a lot. I can imagine going to the mall, looking up, and seeing this hanging at popular clothing store. Very cool!
