Talking Chick's Dig The Size Of My....

    Telescope!

    Specifically, my Celestron C-8.

Come on now, get your minds out of the gutter.

And check out that cool Messier Object poster my lovely wife got me for Christmas. :-)

Playing with the Coolpix 5700 and some self portraits. Don't you love the expression on my face. That's suppose to be a smile. Instead, I look like the Charles Manson of astronomy! :-O

I guess I should leave the self portraits to Nat. She's so much better at it, and she's much, much better looking. But I had a couple of minutes to kill, so I just had to do it! And yeah, I've got more!

And look at that smug expression! Sheesh!

Don't you know Samurai should not let their emotions show lest their opponent take advantage ot them!?!

It's been a while since you've proven you know how to use that thing. When do we get to see some more moon shots? Hehe....

    Hello Peter

My wife bought it for me on Ebay. She won it for $900, plus about $50 for shipping. She got this for me for Christmas 2002. I had wanted a C-8 since I was 19, so I was very excited to get it.

Ironically, about two months after she bought this one, I saw one on ebay complete with a camera brackett, and a 500mm piggyback scope (for astro-photography) that went for the same price! Of course, we had no way of knowing that it would be coming up for auction, and already had one, so we watched someone else buy it. Keep an eye on ebay though, and you can find some sweet deals.

I'm telling you, you just can't leave me unsupervised! :-O

    Smug? I look smug? Coooooooooooool.

Actually, the smile is a technique I've adopted in karate. I love going into a ring a smiling at my opponent. It either cracks them up, or it totally unnerves them. Either way, they don't expect that a killer Samurai is lurking behind that smile. Hehehe. Call it pyshcological warfare.

More shots are on the way. Did you see my recent full moon shot? If not, go back a page or two on Viewfinder. It's there. Also, I took a couple of sun shots a few days ago. The wind was blowing, so it was a challenge getting the sun framed (it is very frame filling), and getting off a shot when the wind died. I'll be sure to post those when I get them.

Now that the moon is past full, I will be trying to get some shots of Jupiter and Saturn next week - weather permitting. I got some practice in on Mars, so I feel confident that I can get some good shots. Stay tuned...

I've posted several shots taken with it over the last year. The moon and sun are fairly easy - provided the wind isn't blowing (telescope/camera shake).

Shooting the planets requires eyepiece projection. You lose a lot of light, and your telescope has to be precisely aligned to track your target. I haven't even tried nebula's yet, but one night, me and M42 (The Orion Nebula) are going to spend some quality time together. ;-)

Here's a shot of the sun, with two VERY large sunspots on it I took last year. In fact, these were some of the largest sunspots ever seen. They were larger than the earth.

The second shot is my best shot of Mars. I used eyepiece projection, and tracked it since the exposure was one second. It also gives you an idea of how difficult it is to get a good shot of a planet.
