    Sebastian Szyszka Speaks the Truth!!!

"A modern, digital camera is just as stupid as anything else. Nothing out there is smarter than experience and knowing what you want to achieve, no matter how much it cost or how many "zones" it meters." - Sebastian Szyszka

This is the greatest photographic quote I have read in quite some time. I just thought I should share it.

    You sure HE said that???

The last thing I remember Seb saying to me was, "Do you watch Family Guy? It rocks!..."

But seriously, I agree. Seb has an understanding and a grasp of many aspects of photography that go far beyond the purely technical...

Great words for sure. Though, I disagree slightly (technicality such as image quality, megapixels, etc.) will affect a picture, but the same key components of composition, color use (read: post production) and so on is based on the user.

    Very true words,

Not so though. Even with a substandard camera, if you have your experience and know what you want, like Seb said, you will get the picture you want. Take a look at Megan's Holga work. I know, I am shamelessly promoting her, but you get my point. It doesn't matter what kind of camera you have, it is the photographer ultimately who determines the quality of the picture. Not that I don't drool over Hasselblads now and then...

    Dzerzhinski,

I believe that if you used an original one megapixel camera and a DSLR, I still think that somehow, you'd notice a different in image quality. Though overall, in the middle ground, I agree, the majority of good shots depend on the photographer.

Re: Sebastian Szyszka Speaks the Truth!!!

whenever I've found myself frustrated with whatever camera I've had at the time, I try and remember that it is the not the bit of kit that is taking the photos, but the mind behind it.

If I could have handed my tiny Nokia camera phone to a Cartier Bresson, or a Brassai I'm sure they would hand it back at the end of the day with amazing, imaginative shots which made the best of the limitations they had to work under. Equally you can hand a top of the range DSLR to some people and they'll still only ever give you shots of people looking awkward in front of buildings with telegraph poles growing out of their heads and their feet cut off at the ankles.

Its a comforting thought that no matter what their budget and what their equipment, a good photographer can always shine.

The kid's got it down! ;) And I agree totally - well possibly with the exception of the images from the first ancient (like 15-20 yrs ago!) DSLR's. I've seen people shoot in parks with big cameras, big tripods and huge lenses, but stopping to shoot wildlife for 20 minutes in the middle of the day won't get you too far, image-wise. I've seen really bad shots (as in displayed prints) from people who carry more gear than my car's worth, and beautiful shots that I'd like to hang on the walls of my house from cameras worth less than the money you might spend on a night out. I think that's what he's saying. The nice gear just makes it easier, that's all.

Here's mine: With any tool, it's at least as important to learn what it can't do versus what it can do. OK, not as cool as Seb's, but I think it's something to realize.

Hey buddy, I mentioned to you years ago that you had an instinctive grasp of composition and technique that transcended your years. Now others are starting to acknowledge it. ;-)
