    Sand Dunes and Zion

I took these pictures about a month ago and never got around to posting them.

For my 30th birthday I took myself on a little roundabout tour of northern Arizona and southern Utah. I hit Lake Powell & Antelope Canyon, spent the first night in Page, AZ. The next morning took me into Utah and Zion. That evening I drove south to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes just a few miles from the AZ border and camped. The last day brought me home through the Kaibab forest of northern Arizona (think north rim here) and it was beautiful and I never thought I'd smell pine again like I did up there.

    Anyway, on to the pictures.

These are all with the Nikon FM2N, tripod, 24mm Sigma, and Velivia 50, except where noted.

    Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

50mm and Tmax 100 (yes, that says "black and white film")

    Zion

The Narrows at the end of Zion Canyon.

Antelope Canyon taken with my Nikon digital p&s:

Me in Antelope with my Mamiya and 30mm Rokunar fisheye:

And finally, a rough one from Lake Powell. Hard exposure here with the rock overexposed and the foreground a little under. There are also water drops on my lens as you can see

    Thanks for looking!

Nice shots, Rick! I really like that first one and the shots from the narrows. Zion is very cool. Did you make it to Bryce Canyon? You took a lot of cameras, huh?

I'll be backpacking in Colorado when I turn 30 in about 6 weeks. Gotta get me some of that Velvia 50. I've only tried Velvia 100F a few times.

Sweet shots Rick! Geez, that Velvia is so sweet! How much camera gear did you take with you? I noticed you mentioned "Mamiya and 30mm Rokunar fisheye", and made a reference to your P&S.

On another track...Happy 30th birthday buddy!!!

    Re: Sand Dunes and Zion

    Thanks everyone!

I took the whole enchilada with me. Medium format, 35mm, and p&s digital. I even snapped a few with my camera phone If you're gonna do a road trip through the southwest United States, you do it right.

Yes, Velvia is sweet. I don't know why people shoot digital.

Thanks also for the birthday wishes. It's funny how people treat you differently when you're 30 than the day before when you were still in your 20's.

There are still rumblings of an Arizona gathering so keep your ears open. We could always do this and more...

Coral Pink sand dunes and Antelope Canyon shots are stunning. Magazine shots.

The hot spots in the narrows shots are distracting, although I love the composition of you in the narrows.

I'm fascinated by your results with the velvia 50. What was your settings for the first shot? I think I'd like to try this film on the Canonet. I'm appreciating film more and more by using it on my little rangefinder, but digital is what gets me through my weekly work demands. However, if I had my own darkroom.....:yesnod:

p.s. I've got me another Canonet coming. It's not the GIII QL17 but the Canonet 28. I think my dream camera right now, though, is the Leica M8, and next to that the M6. Way out of my price range, of course, but a man can dream.

very nice. The Narrows hike is the best, it's hard to get good pictures because of the light in that narrow canyon, and you have the risk of falling to river with the camera, good job, and good place to spend your birthday.

    Hey Ray

Nice to see someone still dreaming of film cameras

The first shot was pretty standard - 24mm lens, Velvia 50 rated normally, and a circular polarizer. I did hyperfocus to make sure it all was in focus, and I bracketed all over the place as the lighting here was hard to read. This looks just like the slide though. Velvia is a wonderful film for nature. It can be pretty hard on skin though - at least caucasian skin. There's really no trick to Velvia that I've found. Just don't point it at people ;) Do make sure you've got enough light as iso 50 can be a real surprise to some and if you're not used to shooting slides then be prepared to bracket. I can't wait to see your results!

Well see, I started off with digital and then dabbled into film rather than vice-versa. So for me I find it far more challenging than digital, since one has to actually slow down and think about every shot rather than just let the camera do most of the work for you.

I have actually been thinking of purchasing darkroom equipment and learning how to develop my own film. I really hate having to drive 20 miles just to have my slides or negative film developed by a lab. So for me it would be much more economical and time efficient to learn how to develop my own film.

Interestingly enough, I learned my lesson about ISO 50 film when I shot with Ilford's Pan F 50 in my Canonet. About 80% of my shots came out underexposed. But the ones that came out were milky smooth and gave me that very classic b/w portrait look, which is typical of that film.

Right now I'm waiting on receiving back a roll of Ilford FP4+ 125 that I shot with my Canonet at 80 ISO but am having it rated at the box speed for developing in Rodinal. It's a little experiment that I thought I would try after reading various posts on the rangefinders forum.

And currently I am shooting a roll of Fuji NPS 160 in the Canonet. But when I'm done with that I think I'm gonna try the Velvia 50 for some landscapes after looking at so many of your photos over the past year.

Do you develop your own film or do take yours into a lab?

Lab! I hear positive film is very hard to process yourself. I tried developing a roll of black and white myself once. It was interesting, but I feel no inclination to do it again. A lot of work involved and no guarantees it will come out right. I just drop it off at the local place and tell them "develop only." It's only a few bucks, really. Then I scan the negs in at home.
