I don't think I have any groups that big. But maybe you can tell us more. What kind of group, what kind of location, what kind of lighting, what camera are you using, etc... ?

ok John here is the shoot I'm planning to do mid afternoon about 3:30pm the sun will be on the lefty hidden away by a bunch of tree so it going to be shaded area thanks God huh, the last time out same area shot a groups of three setting on 5D and 70-200 was shot without flash right at 1/200 sec f/stop 3.5 200 ISO . But with a groups of 20 people I'm going to shoot the 5D with the 24-70 thats way I would have littler more def of field.
I want to use somewhere in f8 and some flash fill and one more note to its on the day for shoot it going to be somewhat cloudy day

    Yep,

Done this, Informal and Formal, at a wedding. Used fill in flash on the 5D 24-70L.

I had the group standing on the steps of a church to get everyone in view as well as standing on a wall to get height. This was at Didache's daugther's wedding. It's hard work trying to get everyone looking the right way.

I do this sort of thing all the time!

    Group 1.
    Nikon D70s - Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX MACRO - Nikon SB-800 Flash
    18mm ~ f/10 ~ 1/125" ~ ISO 200 ~ Flash Mode TTL BL (iTTL)

Shot around noon. Number of people: 32.

    Another shot...no flash this time.

    The Group Shot
    Nikon D70s - Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX MACRO
    21mm - f/10 - 1/60" - ISO 200

    Cheer,
One piece of advice - get back as far as you can and use the longest focal length you can.

FWIW, I'd use f5.6 as a minimum. If you have enough light, go with f8.

hey thanks axel, and speed what do you mean by the longest focal lenght. Lets say I'm using the 24-70 I would have to use it at 70 right, and what is the minimum distance between camera a groups
