Is this a ridiculous way to carry gear?

Finally took the plunge today and bought a Canon Digital Rebel XSi. I realized why people can buy TV's at Best Buy, but not cameras. I went there and Circuit City and although they had great financing, the people working there were totally useless, and didn't know anything about cameras in general.

Ended up going to Ritz where the guy there spent almost an hour with me discussing different models, my wants and likes. I got a good deal with the kit lens, and the 75-300 zoom lens for $50 more. That should get me started until I get enough into it and realize I want better lenses

Anyway, I bought a little backpack for it too to take around with me. I also mountain bike as well and may get the nerve to take this camera along with me. Usually I use a CamelBak when I ride. The camera obviously wouldn't fit in there safely.

Is putting this backpack INSIDE this bigger Kelty pack ridiculous? The Kelty has a pouch for a reservoir of water, but the pack is awfully big. Again, this wouldn't be TOO often that I would take it with me, but occasionally. The camera will serve other functions more often than biking.

    Thanks

Not at all. I put my camera bag in my laptop backpack and everything is handy, and it doesn't look like you are carrying around a lot of expensive gear. I have an older Vicorinox Laptop bag that really just looks like a normal backpack. I have through Boston, New York, LA with it on, and I just blend in.

I'm with zr, not ridiculous at all. When I go out hiking, I put my camera shoulder bag inside my Mountain Hardwear internal frame pack. It keeps my gear all together for convenient access rather than digging around a big pack for film, filters, etc.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I know what you mean about the sales people at the big box stores. I was at Best Buy this weekend, just walking through the camera sections when a sales person asked me if I needed any help. I politely said no and then went to find a CD that I wanted. I couldn't help but to think to myself, "I wonder just how much she knows about the stuff she's selling?" It would have been fun to start asking her a bunch of technical questions just to test her.

Re: Is this a ridiculous way to carry gear?

Good way to do it! I had a Lowe photographer's backpack that held a ton of stuff, but really only carried photo gear very well. Sold it. Also had a Lowe contraption that was a big waist pack for camera gear with a daypack that strapped onto it - and sold it too.

A month ago I was on a workshop and the leader was doing basically what you're doing. He had a lot of lenses and accessories, but they were all in small padded bags inside about a 2500cu in backpack. He had other hiking-related stuff in there too of course, and a water bottle or two on the side (I'd be a little nervous about carrying all that water inside a backpack with gear). So I picked up one myself and have higher hopes for this than either of the others.

It looks like you could easily fit the camera bag in the fisrt small part of your backpack and leave the other more spacious part for hiking stuff, school stuff, or just stuff in general.

If it's comfortable, provides easy access AND affordable, what's not to love?

    Enjoy,

I hate camera backpacks. I did exactly what you're doing for a long time now when hiking.

Re: Is this a ridiculous way to carry gear?

When I did a road trip this summer, I just had my D70s, a single lens, a light tripod. The camera was in a shoulder bag, inside a larger pack.

I think before next summer I'll get myself one of those National Geographic Explorer backpacks that can hold the camera, and two days worth of supplies.
