    Re: portfolio?

I think this is a very good question. I don't have an answer for you, but I would be very interested in hearing what others have to say. I would like to put together a portfolio myself someday.

    Print?

You're talking about a print portfolio, I assume? Does the school list any specs or requirements? There are so many options in this digital age. Unless they specify a print portfolio, I think either a CD, DVD, or Web site would be better. They allow you to show a little more style and creativity, they're much easier to share, and they're cheaper to create.

Besides the medium, there's the question of what images to put in a portfolio. There are all sorts of strategies for that. I would always set up a portfolio to cater to who I'm showing it to. If it's an art school, I'd try to emphasize content, style, and creatity. If the school or client is more interested in technical skills, then I'd keep the work more straightforward and show my exposure and lighting skills as well as attention to detail.

Maybe if you tell us more about the program you're applying for we can give you some more ideas.

    Re: portfolio?

My wife bought me this book recently - I haven't completely been through it but it has a lot of ideas. I only have a small print portfolio besides a website but at this point it suits my purposes. This is the portfolio I use - it's well made and simple, fits 8x10 prints and can fit into my photo briefcase as well as a FedEx box if ever necessary.

Start with a strong shot and end with a strong shot. Everything in the middle has to be your best too; better to have 10 great shots than add another 10 that aren't your best. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

I think a CD portfolio would be next; probably do it myself once I figure it out. CD's are cheap and so is mailing them - plus you don't need it back. I'd rather have someone keep it, maybe they'll look at it again someday. Pretty easy to do other versions that way too - weddings, architecture, whatever.

    Hello Individuel,

I asked the very same question last summer and I received valuable comments so here is the link to the thread: building a portfolio, seeking for help.

I think you might find interesting informations there.

To those who answered to me few months ago: my portfolio is physically half completed at that point in time (there are 10 pictures in it moreover) and I already identified few others pictures that are waiting to be post processed and printed. I chosen a black leather porfolio meant to carry arround 30 8x12 prints. I stick to 8x12 prints although I consider adding 1 or 2 square pictures. I figure out that I should be able to fill it with about 20 pictures before submitting it this year in august.

    regards

    Seb
