    PCH Drive...

A few months back my boss and I went for a nice long drive up the Pacific Coast. We started off north of San Francisco near Muir Woods and continued up to Bodega Bay. I love to drive and this is a wonderful place to get some nice shot for all of you native to the Bay Area. Here are some pics I was able to dig up. These shots were all taken with a Nikon Coolpix 3100. Enjoy

Here are a few more. The last pic was a total accident. I was actually trying to capture the waves hitting his legs but instead I got him flying away I was very happy with that accident.

Stupid question, that is Hwy 1, isn't it? I did that drive in August and it was a great drive! Did you stop at Hog Island Oyster Co? That might have been the highlight for me...

Yup that's Hwy 1. We did not stop at Hog Island Oyster Co though. I am waiting for the chance to go back with my new camera and shoot again. Next time I want to go to Muir Woods too. There is so much beauty there. All of those massive Redwoods make you feel so small.

    Re: PCH Drive...

I've been to Muir Woods twice and it is an amazing place. The first time I was there I had no idea what to photograph. I might have taken a shot or two but knew I wouldn't get any "keepers" - and confirmed that when I got the film back. A couple days later I saw a lecture by Galen Rowell on his book Bay Area Wild and he said that Muir Woods was a very difficult place to decent photograph. If he said that, then it must be true!

I really wanted to take one of his workshops but they were sold out long in advance. This was the only chance I'd have on that trip of seeing him, and now I'm very glad I was there.

    PCH 1 :O)
Nice images. I like the macro of the Ants, of course...the EVO
    I try to get up the PCH Hwy 1 once a month.It really is nice living so close to such untouched beauty. I highly recommend driving this route, stop often {( You may drift off the road from looking while driving}
The heritage California Redwoods are a look into the past.
I hope that these protected areas will be preserved/avail for generations to come.
Nice to meet you Dave. Welcome to PR.

Thanks for the welcome Rick. I think it took us about 4 hours to do this trip with all of the stops. Another drive I really enjoy is Mines Road in Livermore to Mt. Hamilton. That seems to take 4 hrs or more also. That drive is also fun but if you get in mechanical trouble you're kind of screwed unless you have a Sat phone.

Farther north is really pretty and there are some fantastic B&Bs to stay at. The driver always has the hard part of the drive on HWY 1 - so much beautiful scenery but you can't hardly look at it. Stopping often is the only way to go.

And south of Monterey is just as beautiful....

There have been more than a few automobile commercials filmed along HWY 1 if I'm not mistaken....and a few movies too (Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" comes to mind).

    Nice pictures!

The car is a joy to drive as I've put over 35k miles on it since mid June of 2005. The Evo feels right at home on those types of roads. My wife and I have 4 cars (3 road worthy and one in surgery) and I always seem to grab the keys to the Evo

I guess that was in Bodega which is a couple miles inland from Bodega Bay. The church is still there and maybe the other buildings - haven't seen the move in a while. I have two regrets about the drive - not being able to go farther on it, and having to drive the big boat of a rental car that we had. My VW doesn't pass anything but gas stations but it sure likes roads like that!

Do you have one of those TDI's that get 50mpg on the highway? Those are handy now days. VW Diesels engines seem to be good for 300K plus miles of service if well maintained.

Heck yeah, heck yeah and heck yeah!

'03 bought new, now with 67k on it and as trouble free as a car gets. You have to either spend a fortune having the dealer work on it (not always a good option because of their unfamiliarity with these things), be willing to get your hands dirty occasionally (10k oil changes!) or know a really good mechanic that specializes in them. I have #2 and #3 covered... Totally off topic, but - TDI Club.

I did this drive many years ago with family (I was a child). It was beautiful, but we stopped so often (read: every turnout), and the road was so twisty that I was very carsick. Kind of ruined it

    Great pictures.

    Great pictures.
I got sick also on this road when I was about 10yrs old. Actually the area where I got sick as a child was further north by Goat Rock Beach and Genner. I felt good as new afterwards. 7 UP always helps me too. My wife gets car sick very easily. We did this drive together twice. Both times it was barf-o-rama multiple times for her
