Re: PC user in a strange new world...

Nooooooo.......Once down the dark path you start, forever will it dominate your destiny. Apple, Macintosh, these lead to the dark side ;) ;)
I'm kidding of course. I've been tempted myself, but until the day arrives when I can build a Mac from scratch, I'm sticking to computers I can build and upgrade.

True dat Lionheart! What I'm getting from this thread and my own observations thus far is that it is close enough that being able to continue to build my own pc's will be the deciding factor.

I recall hearing, not long ago, that Mac was either going to port the OS to run on pc's or allow Windows to run on Mac hardware. I can't remember which. Can anyone else remember which it is and what are your thoughts?

It's kinda both. Darwin, which is the open-source kernel of MacOSX, has been available for the PC for about 4 years now. Apple is also moving to Intel processors for all their systems, and the first ones should be available in a month or two.

MacOS is still going to be limited to computers built by Apple, at least in theory. They're going to use some Trusted Computing/Hardware DRM feature to prevent anyone from installing MacOS on commodity hardware, but I give it a month before this feature is cracked and MacOS is available to anyone.

Apple also said they won't prevent anyone from running another operating system on the hardware. That means that you can run any flavor of Windows, Linux or Unix alongside MacOS.

I'm far too lazy to hold a grudge against a company just for the principle of it. I choose what I use because I like it better. I'd also switch sides in a heartbeat if I had a reason to.

I was trained for two years in school on graphics programs on the PC. I had no gripe. Then I went into the work world and had to switch to mac. I thought it would be scary and hard, but it was a piece of cake. Learning curve was almost non-existent.

I've used macs ever since, although I still use PCs at school and at libraries, etc. I just love the mac because it does what I want the way I expect it to, so I don't have to think too hard to get things done.

You know Kelly, you make a very good point here. While I love to poke fun at windows, and make fun of windows problems, after some months on the Mac system I am coming to see your point of view. I admit that my dislike for windows and frustration with linux was a big part of the reason that i went over to Mac. But the more you use the OS the more you realize that it is just another flavor of the same ice cream. I mean lets be honest. Apple, windows, and linux are all derivatives of the original Xerox OS.

I prefer Mac. It is better, I truly believe this, but I can't really say that I hold a real grudge against windows. After all, I gotta get my shits and giggles from somewhere.
