    organizing photos

I have been using Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0, but also have Photoshop Elements 3 which also organizes. I have not tried to use Elements yet to organize. Anyone have any thoughts as to which is better?

    Re: organizing photos

I used 3 for about 3 months and never really liked it, but must admit, I never managed to get to the meat of the program. I had been using album 2 for several years and naturally am more comfortable with it, but I would think that given a chance, learning the little points of Elements 3 will be worth the trouble. Naturally, each will have their pluses.

I've only dabbled with PS Album 3 (latest version) so I really can't say which is better between it and Elements. You might want to check out http://www.iview-multimedia.com/ (iView Media or iView Media Pro). I've been playing with the pro version for a few months and really like how it works and what it can do.

I've been very happy with PhotoMechanic from a group called Camerabits. It's a pretty easy to use browser for the photos and will allow you to easily access your imaging software from within the interface.

    Re: organizing photos

I too do it at file level. One reason is that on occasion Adobe PS will lose exif info. That may not be a problem for the average shooter but to pros it can be a major pain. Partly because one item that the camera writes to each photo is my name, which helps in copyright dealings. Thats another advantage to having certain pro bodies.
Each job I shoot is copied from the card to a drive in a folder such as: 0807005BY400 which is basically the date 08/07/2005 Brickyard 400. The photos are then put into that folder using the date as the file name and a three digit number such as 080705252.

That is how I do it too. I have my images in the my pictures folder in windows xp and then in subfolders by camera model...ect. It's a system that has worked great for me since I moved to digital 2 years ago.

I organize my photos at the file level for the most part, but I use ACDSee to browse and batch rename files in their appropriate folders. I usually organize the files in folders with the format year-month-day+descriptive name and use ACDSee to batch rename the files in that folder the same way with the foldername+number. I like ACDSee because it loads the images fast, and the right click menus allow fast access to resizing, rotation, rename, copy, move, e-mail etc, and also allows you to open your photos in the editor of your choice (photoshop of course).

    I don't use either.

I'm still a fan of ThumbsPlus, have been for years.
It does basic resizing, USM, has an accessible database (I'm a programmer too) and is far faster than PS, even Elements.
