Getting Off My Duff

[Old Timer]

I figured it was about time to quit using the weather as an excuse and get off my duff and get out and get a few photo. If you have been using the same excuse here's your chance to match my time out in the 20 degree weather. Post a few of your mid winter images.

nice shots OT. I find it very challenging to photograph in the winter because I feel everything is so dull and monchromatic. But you have excelled with these shots, and they are very nice indeed. Blow that first one up big and frame it!

oh and unfortunately all my winter shooting has mainly occured indoors, because that's where I like to stay. the few shots that have been outdoors are on slides, so you won't see them for a little while.

I'm gonna agree with you L4L. Very nice pictures. I went on a shoot of some water dropping into a little puddle, with lots of snow around it. Tommorow, I'm shooting some sledding, AND setting up a ramp.

Its gonna be a good day!

20 degrees, you lucky duck! It got up to 14 here yesterday and my hot water pipe to my shower finally thawed out. Thank goodness after 3 days it dind't burst.

Thats some pretty country you've got there. I dont know much about horses, but are those paints?

Thanks for taking a look at these guys. I actually had fun out in the snow once I decided to take the plunge. And that 20 degree stuff was mid afternoon. On my walk to work this morning it was 4 degrees. You are right that horse would be called a paint. I'm a little far north to have many thoroughbreds. These are a friends daughters pleasure ponys.

Thanks you guys. Glad you like the tree. That was my favorite. I posted it in the gallery and didn't get a comment on it and I thought I might be wrong about it. I have been taking pictures of that tree for several years and have it in about every season and weather condition. The first one I have of it is on slide shortly after returning from a Nikon school when I was trying to apply some of the techniques that I had learned. That was sometime in the 70's.

These are a little different for you, yes? I don't remember you being as much of a pattern-seeker as you've demonstarted here in these shots. Is Chunk rubbing off on you? Or maybe I am forgetful. Either way, they are very very nice! Good work! The tree is my fave as well.

Rick I wish I knew what to expect from me. And yes maybe Chunk has rubbed off a little on me. I think if that is so than it is for the better because I have been impressed by his resent work. When I step back and look at my body of work over the last 30 years or so I struggle to find what I would consider a style. Here in may lie the problem with my photography.

Funny, I didn't notice your photography having a problem

But, if you're feeling the pull toward focusing your style, I recommend finding your favorite pictures that you've taken, or your favorite shots that someone else has taken, and exploring that style fully. That way you get to develop yourself further in the style you like without ever losing your talents in other areas too.

Just my 2 cents. Though, I've always appreciated your photography and don't really see that you need to improve!

If I were asked what your style is, I'd probably say it was story telling and documentary on a wide range of subjects. Your excellent technical and compositional skills allow us to share your view of a world you love and enjoy.

My favourite is the tree shot. I Don't get enough time for photography at the moment but come next Friday I will be in Canada for skiing and the camera is going to.

Any tips for exposing photos in the snow?

If I were asked what your style is, I'd probably say it was story telling and documentary on a wide range of subjects. Gee Chunk I think that's the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my photography. In reflection I think you may be right about the story telling and documentary approach. I have always tended more to a journalist view of photography and maybe some of my images reflect that.

I agree - and mean that as a great complement. That tree and fence shot is excellent! I have a couple of shots from last weekend's trip to northern Wisconsin but have been so busy this week that I haven't had a chance to download them. The only "20 degrees" I saw was was the wind chill - negative, that is... I'll post a shot or two tomorrow.

Thanks Mike and Roger. I didn't do anything exotic on these. I metered with center weight which is my usual method. Most of the snow exposures were done at about 1/500th at f11 with a +.05EV ISO 200. I did a slight adjustment in Lightroom. I have sometimes had problems metering in the snow but yesterday things went pretty well.

Very nice, OT. Makes me want to brave the cold as well - and it's not nearly as cold here! I can always use the excuse that we are snow-less and therefore very brown and lifeless. But I will make it point this weekend to get out (past the edge of the yard) and take some photos! Thanks!
