    Talking New lens shipped yesterday!

After much thinking and trying to make the right decision, I ordered the new Canon
24-105 IS L lens about a month ago. It's very popular - and has been shipping everywhere but the US. However, mine was shipped yesterday - the same day the store got it from Canon. I got it from Badger's which has an excellent reputation and they are very good to deal with. They're not big like B&H, but their price was $150 less. Plus it's not at B&H yet.

The price is more than I thought I'd ever pay for a lens. However, my friends encouraged me to get it for my 65th birthday present (to myself). In order to do it I have to sell my almost new 35mm/f2.0 and hardly used 85mm/f1.8. I wouldn't have purchased these lenses had I known about the new IS lens. I'm keeping my 17-40 and 50mm. I have a slight camera shake problem and used to have the 28-135 so I know how great the IS is. I finally admitted to myself that the camera shake isn't going away - and I've gotten more shots this past year that I've had to delete. It's that 65 thing, you know.

I'll post some pictures when I get it. Just wanted to share my excitement. I love that feeling you get when you open a new box of photo equipment.

Getting new gear is always so cool.

Especially anything with IS/VR on it!

Now I'm really curious about this "Badger's". Maybe I don't get out enough, but I've never heard of them. Please, share that website with us, so we can bookmark it for future reference. :-D

    And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks Speed

The people at Badger are so nice. The gentleman told me they get a lot of orders for equipment because of their prices. He said they don't inflate prices, and do a better business that way. They also have a good reputation. Here is the link to their website.

Thanks again for the birthday wishes.

Well Happy Birthday Liz! Sorry that I didn't know sooner. 65 is a real milestone and one to be very proud of. I think that your gift to yourself is a wise investment and a great way to celebrate. I have upgraded my equipment in the last year and one of the justifications that I have made is that at 57 I'm not getting any younger. I have told myself for years that some day I would have these things and I wasn't getting any younger.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Happy Birthday !!

I look forward to seeing the images from this lens.
Maybe I'll replace the 24-70 F2.8 L with this IS lens, maybe not as I like the wider aperture for motorsport

I'm finding that the 100-400 works best at f9 which is too slow for anything except bright sunlight.
Which is I suppose why the wide aperture big glass is so hugely expensive, and used by so many pro sports shooters !
I just don't want to spend 1/3 the price of a new car (or a V12 Jaguar 'E' type) on a lens

    Enjoy your new toy ;)

Thanks OT. You always have a positive way of looking at things. I have many reasons to be grateful. :-)

I agree. It's a good investment for me in the sense that I can finally admit to myself that my hands are a bit shakey - and IS is almost necessary if I don't want to use a tripod. I'm a bit concerned about the weight as I have a back/neck problem due to a car accident. However, I have the 17-40 which is only a few ounces less - and my XT is almost 1/2 lb. lighter than the 300D I had. So I guess it will feel the same as the 300D + 17-40 which I managed.

It will be delivered Tuesday according to UPS tracking.

Thanks! We had fun in the Berkshires! The time was too short.

Big decision. I read where quite a few others are selling the 24-70 for this lens.

I just don't want to spend 1/3 the price of a new car (or a V12 Jaguar 'E' type) on a lens

I never thought I'd spend this much money on a lens. I have to sell my 85mm/1.8 and 35mm/f2.0 both of which are hardly used. But I need to sell them to help me pay for the 24-105, bringing the cost down a bit. I love them both - but the 24-105 covers both focal lengths, and if it's as good as it's supposed to be, I'll be happy. I don't use the 85mm enough - and I'm keeping the 17-40 and 50mm.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

    Liz
