New Camera - new lens - new photos!

I finally got to try out my new Olympus E-620 with the 50mm/f2 attached. Here are some of the first photos - just snapshots. I did post some of them on the Olympus forum, but wanted to share them with everyone here since I got such good advice about whether or not to purchase the E-620 and/or 50mm/f2 on VF. Plus I enjoy sharing the excitement of getting new equipment in the PR "lounge."

I now have 2 Olympus cameras (coming out of years with 2 Canon cameras). I use the E-PL1 for my every day take-it-with-me camera. And I love it! However, I wanted the 50mm/f2 lens for portraits, flowers, etc. (smooth bokeh) and it was way too slow - and kept hunting on the E-PL1. It does really well on the E-620 - better than I expected. I've always had a dslr and p&s - so just carrying on the tradition! The great thing is that the E-620 as well as the E-PL1 has in body stablization.

These are all straight out-of-camera - no post processing.

Jeremy - offered a treat to pose. This is the best he could do.

Molly was offered a treat too - but she knows me too well....knows it's a bribe! She doesn't like the camera at all!

Liz I have read nothing but good about the 50mm. One real sharp lens. I am sure you will be happy. Is it a heavy lens?

    Greg,

It weighs about 10 oz and is relatively small (I guess everything is relative/subjective). It's much lighter than any of my previous "L" lenses! OTOH, heavier than the nice compact E-PL1 kit lens.

And, it weighs 2 oz more than my old favorite 50mm/f1.4 which was glued to my 400D.

Here are the specs - along with a photo which might give you a better idea of what it looks like.

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...specifications

I absolutely LOVE this lens. It's my favorite. I just have to learn how to use it.

Up until now I didn't think there were any lenses that could compare to the Canon "L" lenses. But.....Wow!

Yep! Olympus has made my switch from Canon quite easy! Especially that 50mm/f2 lens - comparable to my "L" lenses....seriously!

    Thanks Larry,

I thought about you actually when I viewed the images on the computer for the first time and saw how sharp! The reason I thought about you is because I have missed my favorite 50mm/f1.4 lens - and I am really looking forward to putting this lens to work - and posting some images on that awesome 50mm lens thread!!!!!!!

Hi Julie! Thanks for looking and yes! I do believe I made the right choice. I have to say that the Olympus 50mm/f2 lens gives some of the "L" lenses a bit of competition. Since I gave up my Canon equipment, this is the first lens that I can actually say is now my favorite. It's an incredibly sharp lens with fine color, so now I have no regrets about switching gears......

I always enjoy your posts, photos and threads!

The first thing I mentioned to myself was, "those are sharp". Very nice setup and i think that if you can be lighter on the equipment and get these type of results, then hooray!

Thanks for your comments, Gary. I've really missed my Canon 50mm/f1.4 since I switched over to Olympus. It feels so good to have another comparable lens and on a nice dslr again. Hopefully I'll take it out again this weekend.

Thanks Speed! It's always so good to see you! Yes, I'm happy with the dslr. Thankfully it isn't too heavy - even with IS in the body. I really like my E-PL1, but have to admit that I've missed the "feel" of the dslr. It just feels good to once again have it in my hands. And the lens is awesome.

    Thank you for your encouragement.

Actually I did purchase this lens originally a couple of months ago to use with the E-PL1, but found it very slow - and it hunted with almost every focus. I did send it back after trying it out indoors in available light. However, some people here suggested it would work better/faster with the E-620. I had almost gone back to a Canon dslr, but decided on the E-620 because of IBIS. So I ordered another one.

It's now my favorite lens......and yes! it works much faster on the E-620 - and it doesn't hunt like it did. I think it hunted once when I tried it out. The cats were shot with available light - no post processing.

Re: New Camera - new lens - new photos!

It's interesting, looking through the VF on the E-620, the smaller writings (like a street sign) look blurry. I thought it looked this way in the image so turned up the optical diopter all the way - still didn't help. My Canon dslrs worked when the diopter was turned up all the way (with one exception - forgot which one). Guess my age is catching up with me.

So I ordered the +3 attachment for the diopter and just received it today so I know what the image will really look like.

I'm very happy I purchased this camera - even though I have the E-PL1 - it's worth it to share some lenses - and IMO would be worth just using it with the 50mm/f2.
