    need to rant...

So my father was given a Canon 10D for Christmas this year from his brother, and he bought himself the 17-40L for it. I told him that he really should get a more versatile lens (like a 28-105), especially since he shoots mostly snapshots and doesn't get too creative with it.

Yesterday I asked to throw the 17-40 on my Elan 7 so I could play around a little. His response: "the lens doesn't come off this camera!" I can appreciate the need to keep the chip free of dust (and it is HIS camera), but what is the point of having an SLR if you're not willing to swap out lenses every now and then?

Anyway, just needed to vent a bit...

failed the 'sharing' unit in kindergarten maybe?

I don't know, I'm with you on this one, that's why I have an SLR, so I can swap lens. Nothing says impressive as a massive telephoto lens...right?

My 24-70 2.8L doesn't come off the 20d. While I like the option to be able to change lens if I need to, I've found that this one works best, and I don't need any others.

Perhaps he was speaking figurativly, as opposed to literally. Although I still think everyone should learn to share, even if they don't want to. Next time I go to my mom's, I'm going to take my 70-200 f/4L for her to try out. Because my mommy taught me to share.

it'll make better use on the elan anyways since it will be a real 17mm lens instead of a 27mm lens.

Maybe ask why the lens doesn't come off his camera? Or just swipe it when he's not looking.

    Re: need to rant...

He's paranoid about dust getting inside the camera body, which is why he doesn't want it swapped. And he knows that if borrow the entire camera, then it will surely come off because, as was said, it's only equivalent to a 27 mm on the 10D and will serve it's purpose a lot better on the Elan.

Hell, I've swapped out lenses at least once a week on my Elan for nearly 2 years now!

Anyway, I guess it's pure ignorance and selfishness.... but his perogative. I think next time I'm over I'm just going to swap it out for my old 28-80 and see if he notices

    Re: need to rant...

It is just as likely that with that lens you will still get dust in it as it isn't exactly sealed such as L lenses are....and some of those aren't exactly dust proof.

Give him an empty ball point pen, a used up toilet roll, a half eaten sandwich, one sock, tickets for last months game, and an invitation to use any of your kit at any time of day or night, you'll even deliver. Put it all in Christmas wrapping marked Happy Birthday with a note that you love him anyways...

I'm with Adina...9 times out of 10 my 28-70 remains on my camera body...even though I have 3 other lenses. I guess it's a combination of laziness and scared of dust

I'm a bad boy. I switch lenses nearly every 20 minutes when out and about. I've even done this in the sand, rain, and snow. Everything still seems to be okay and clear!

On that note, he just seems ignorant (read: not stupid) and still in the stage of attachment children go through with new toys. And of course, we all know photographers just love their toys. Give him time before you don a ski-mask.

    Re: need to rant...

I'm such a nice guy I loaned the sports editor my Old 1D and my new 70-200 USM IS lens and my 433D flash while I was off for my shoulder surgery

You know, I got the camera and lens back....but not the flash! It's still sitting in his trunk!

    Re: need to rant...

I'm sure he realizes that the lens does come off the camera body - when he got it, the body came in one box and the lens in another. So I don't think he's being literal about it.

Maybe he is being paranoid about the dust. I was a little aprehensive about it when I bought my DSLR but now I know it's no big deal. I switch lenses whenever I want, but that's my choice.

Bottom line is, it's his camera. If he doesn't want to switch lenses then he shouldn't have to.
