    My Ramblings...

I sometimes just throw the camera in the truck and take off on the back roads looking for what ever. I did that last Saturday afternoon. I was out for about 3 hours. The shot of the buffalo earlier this week was one of the things I encountered. A couple of the macros I did I posted over on the N&W forum. But I just wanted to share a little more of my ramblings with my friends here on Viewfinder. I'm sure many of you do this same type thing feel free to use this thread to share your ramblings.

Wow OT! You don't ramble like the normal person. Your ramblings are interesting and a few are outstanding! I'm interested in posting some of mine, but will have to do it later in the week.

In the meantime, that shot of the white horse is awesome! Looks like he is posing for you. It's a First Place blue ribbon winner IMO.

My 2nd favorite is the Little House on the Prairie...... It's just great - I love shots like this.

OT, you have a heart after my own!

I used to take trips like that around the Virginia backcountry when I lived there. I even got a few pictures like these. No buffalo though

    Nice shots!

Liz thanks for your comments and for looking at these rambling shots. I don't have a city to wander around and do people pic like you are able to so I make do with what I've got. I'd love to be able to try and do some images like you and Charles have posted but I don't get much of an opportunity to do that. Glad you like the horse pics. Those took a hard brake job and backing up a good ways to get back to them.

I think the white horse pic is really good. You might consider entering it in a contest. Maybe the owner would like to purchase one to hang on his/her wall. It is really good IMO. I bet Kathy "Cowgirl" would love it.

BTW, any chance you'd ever take a trip with your wife to NYC? That would be great - we could have a gathering......

Sounds like a great idea. Seems like all our trips lately have been to see family. Kids are scattered around and Joy has brothers and sisters around the midwest. We will be in PA latter this summer but only as far as State College, PA. But I will not give up on the idea of making a gathering somewhere like NY.

Hey Rick, thanks for the comments. I really enjoy getting out like that. I will be in West Texas in September. Our son lives near Midland and his first child is due in Sept and we hope to get there to see the new grand child.

Nice pics OT! This is something that I do quite often. Sometimes I will even set my tripod up inside the cab of my truck. It almost feels like I have a rollcage around me, but it works a lot better than resting a long lens on the window with some sandbags. It's very relaxing way to spend a few hours on the weekend.

Thanks for the title Ray I hadn't thought of that one but it sure works. I guess a lot of us enjoy that type thing Michael. It's the kind of thing you have to do alone, most companions wouldn't like sitting and waiting for no telling how long on the side of the road while you scamper back to catch that scene that caught your eye as you drove by.

you have beautiful areas to "ramble" in.... I'm appreciating the "country" of our surroundings more and more every day.... I rambled for about 5 minutes(see "portrait")

I would have added to your thread but had posted before I saw this....darn ;o)

    So true!

I left a girlfriend sitting in the car for half an hour once while I was shooting a sunset. I guess I tend to lose track of time simetimes

The worse is when you have your tripod out, and you're doing everything right, bracketing, etc, and you know there's people waiting so you have to hurry through it.

Some things are best to do alone!

    Hey,

Just twigged - you chaps and chapesses are using cars - Rambling for me is shanks's pony (to use an Americanism).

I normally drop the car off at a point and then walk to get the photography. Hmmm! am I doing something wrong? Agree with the point of doing it on your own - wife daughter get really grumpy.

As for the photos they are wonderful. The three horses is my favourite of the lot and the shed, and the horse and the ...

I agree Roger. This technique lets you cover a little more ground however. It does include a good bit of walking however. Saturday while out on this adventure I parked the truck by an old barn and hiked back the small country road I was on about an 1/8 of a mile well out of site of the vehicle. I was bent over concentrating on a bee on a lovely orange flower and heard a car coming down the road. Next thing I know I hear the screeching of brakes and the vehicle thrown in reverse. I looked up just as the driver was jumping out of the car. He looked kind of funny when he saw the camera in my hand. He said,"Oh your taking pictures." He though I was sick and bent over along side the road and had come back to offer help. I thanked him and he went on his way, but just another example of how we as photographers are some times looked on in a weird manner.

I posted this earlier on the N&W board but this was what I was bent over shooting at the time.

Nice definition of the musculature on that white horse. The gate shot has a little humor in it... someone must keep forgetting where he puts his padlock keys.

Hey Chunk. Yeah I got a real chuckle out of that three lock deal. The funny part is it was just on a pasture field nothing exciting at all behind the gate.

Glad to here there are still concerned citizens around.

When I ramble its more like 6 miles from the car or 12 mile round trip .

Love the picture of the bee and the orange flower - is that hand held or tripod because the definition is excellent.

That is hand held, I had nice mid afternoon sun and was able to shot at 1/125 at f14. Shot with the D2H and Nikkor 105mm macro lens.

Well, I would never do such a thing. Actually it was closer to an hour. Oops. Dinner was costly. And quiet.

Great work, Larry! What amazes me is that these are from one afternoon out. I've done this a lot (not recently, but need to!) but am usually happy to get one or two shots worthy of sharing.

Looks like I have to add that lense to my wish list, a great photo..... Unluckily for me the country roads that I frequent are in a area that is turning urban, and all the trasplants are driving like there on a f*&*ing freeway. There have been some nasty crashes lately.

Hard to go wrong with the 105mm macro. I bought mine used just a couple of weeks after I bought my D70. Walked into the camera shop and saw it sitting there on the used equipment shelf and decided it had to come home with me. Mine is the older version but I have no problems with the quality of the glass. As for urban expansion it's happening everywhere. Farms over night become subdivisions. Lucky for me we still have area around us that are still very rural in nature even though new homes keep cropping up every day. The over look were I took the landscape picture the last time I was on that ridge didn't have a home within 1/4 mile of it now there is mobile home siting right in the middle of the overlook I had to walk up there drive to get that picture. The last time I was there I spent most of my time taking photo of wild flowers where the MH is now.
