    Long Live Film!!!!
    Who says film is dead???

I'm here to say that film is ALIVE and WELL.

    ;-)

For anyone who may be curious, the cameras are, left to right, Pentax K1000, Nikon F5, Nikon N80.

The Fujifilm is Superia Xtra 400, which I use as my everyday film. Great stuff - fast, great colors, great detail. The rolls in front are two rolls of Sensia 100, two rolls of Reala, and two rolls of Superia Xtra 800. I didn't dig out my NPH or the other two or three rolls I had. They seemed like overkill. Too bad I didn't have any Velvia and Provia for this shot.

As you can see, I prefer Fuji (and how!). The only other films I shoot are Porta 160NC (shown here) and Kodak Gold 100.

Nice family there. Is that an F5 or F6? I miss slide film and the whole process of watching the film come to life after the last stage of processing as the film dries and the jewels of light start to brighten. On the other hand, I don't miss the scanning process, checking for dust on the slides, etc...One day, I'll pick up on film again.:-)

I have not shot a roll of film since April 2004 when the D70 arrived. I just ordered an Epson RX620 that Chunk found online with $150 worth of rebates. Now I should be able to do a little scanning. Is film in my future again??? Let's hope so because I still love it and I do have 6 Nikon film cameras gathering dust somewhere.

That is the F5 center stage. It is flanked by my K1000 and my N80.

I LOVE my F5. It is solid. It is handfilling. It is incredibly fast. It is a dream machine.

I put the MB-16 battery pack on my N80, and it's a nice upgrade (my pinky finger doesn't go under the camera now), but it's not the same as having the battery pack built in. Most folks have raved about the F6 and how great it feels, and how light it is, and then they put the battery pack on it. HUH??? To me it makes more sense having it built in. One less thing to break or malfunction.

    My two cents worth.

    Thanks for the comments Lionheart!

I've had this idea for about a month now. Finally got around to taking the shot.

Glad you liked it my friend.

PS: Next time, take the Velvia out of the bag. It's Velvia for crying out loud!

I'm sure the D200 will put a big dent in my film use, but I just can't see not shooting film. If nothing else, I expect to shoot slides.

Besides, even when I get the D200, I've got to wait to get my SB-800 before I can really use it effectively indoors. At $325, plus shipping, it may be Fathers Day 2007 before I get the SB-800. :-(

I know the SB-28 will fire on a Nikon digital, but it fires at full power. There's no metering, so it's hit and miss on exposure. The SB-800 will be a necessity. So I'm sure I'll continue using film for indoor shots (weddings, basketball, etc) for several months after I get my D200.

Good luck on that scanning. Let us know how you like that scanner. There are others who have the same thought...

    I hear ya buddy!

Maybe you need to post that shot...

I still had six or eight rolls I didn't dig out for this shot (mostly NPH). I figured it would be overkill. The boxes of Superia Xtra 400 were all full (10 rolls each), the box of Sensia 100 was full (10 rolls), and the box of Porta 160 NC had three rolls in it. But you get the idea, and you see how I order/buy my film. By the multipack box!

I'm thinking I need to order some Velvia....

    THE VELVIA....

    50 speed Velvia...

Oh it's killing me! Christmas seems like it's decades away!

And I may change my mind, but I can't see giving up slides.

I know cameras today come with a "saturated" mode, or a "very saturated" mode, or a "super saturated" mode. And apparently they still aren't the same as Velvia, otherwise Outdoor Photographer wouldn't be writing articles on "How To" get the Velvia look - via Photoshop.

Also, there is the matter of the SB-800. It is going to take me a while to save up the money for it. Hopefully I'll get it by Fathers Day 2007, but it may have to wait until Christmas 2007 - oh the horror of the very thought! So the D200 will be primarly an outdoor camera until I get a SB-800.

Thanks for the comments buddy! And I'm jealous that you already have a D200. It is everything you dreamed it would be? Have you written a review of it yet?

That's a large objective lens on that X-7A. What lens is that?

My Pentax is the K1000. Great little camera. I usually feed it a steady diet of Reala, Provia 100, Provia 400, and Sensia 100.

The colors and details spoil you.

If I had an E-6 lab in my county, I'd be shooting LOTS more slide film.

    It IS slow!

But I haven't tried any of the 100 speed Velvia yet.

My everyday film is Superia Xtra 400. Fast, good colors and details. I must admit, I really like 100 speed films (Reala, Provia 100, Sensia 100, Kodak Gold 100) with Porta 160 NC being my favorite portrait/wedding film.

I like 800 speed for astrophotography work. I've never tried anything faster, but I've got to admit, I'm curious to try some.

With defference to all you film types, this thread is like a trip down memory lane. My mother used some of the equipment shown here, a very long time ago. I don't even remember how many Vivitar flashes 283 and 285 that I have worn out by over-use. Soligor lenses must be relics by now too. I managed to wreck one a 200mm 2.8 purely through constant use too. And film at one point I was ordering several hundred rolls of that too, per year, mostly Kodachrome 64 and Fuji.

Things have certainly changed. Now it is batteries and memory cards that are ordered in large quantities. Flashes are still consumable but they cost more too. As to lights well video projector bulbs at around $500 per bulb are really a cost factor as well. At least there are no longer any chemicals to mess around with and a laptop and a comfortable chair is certainly a better "darkroom" then the old style reality.

You know I'm a D50 evangelist now, right? The D50 is every bit as good as the D70s in my opinion and the price is right vs. the D200. Beach Camera is selling refurbished D50's at $399. I have bought from Beach several times without any problems. I've seen new D50's as low as $520 at reputable dealers. The cost difference vs. the D200 would easily pay for that SB-800.

I want to get a D200, too, but I'm trying to wait until the price starts dropping like they always do. Now the D50 isn't your F5, but the D50 is better than your N80 IMHO.

By the way, I shot two rolls of film a week ago for the first time in about two years. I'm waiting to get the prints and CDs back. My sister-in-law shot with my camera (N90) some and cou;dn't believe I was using film!

Yes, I've noticed that you've chimed in on a couple of occasions comparing the D50 to the D70. And you're given the D50 rave reviews as well. I've also been advised to get a D50 or a used D70 to get used to the digital workflow, and WB, etc.

"The D50 is every bit as good as the D70s in my opinion"

That's an impressive testimony! Especially considering that the D50 is cheaper by several hundred dollars.

"Beach Camera is selling refurbished D50's at $399."

That's an incredible price! Now that's tempting.

"I want to get a D200, too, but I'm trying to wait until the price starts dropping like they always do. Now the D50 isn't your F5, but the D50 is better than your N80 IMHO."

I'm with you there buddy. That's the only redeeming thing about getting one for Christmas - I'm hoping the price will drop by then. The 30D selling for $1400 should help bring the price down some.

On the other hand, there's still a backlog of folks wanting the D200. ASAP Photo in Greenville still has five slips hanging up where folks have already paid their $1700 (plus tax) and are waiting for their camera to come in. (They had nine slips hanging up back in February!) I'm beginning to wonder if Nikon will have caught up with the demand by Christmas!

"By the way, I shot two rolls of film a week ago for the first time in about two years. I'm waiting to get the prints and CDs back. My sister-in-law shot with my camera (N90) some and couldn't believe I was using film!"

    Hehehehe! ;-)

I was pleasantly surprised when Nikon came out with the F6. Digital is definitely all the rage now, and I'm heading that way, but film is still alive and well, and will be around for a long time to come. Black and white and slide films are seeing an increase in sales, and Half Hour Photo is still doing a booming business processing color film.
