I'm sure the D200 will put a big dent in my film use, but I just can't see not shooting film. If nothing else, I expect to shoot slides.

Besides, even when I get the D200, I've got to wait to get my SB-800 before I can really use it effectively indoors. At $325, plus shipping, it may be Fathers Day 2007 before I get the SB-800. :-(

I know the SB-28 will fire on a Nikon digital, but it fires at full power. There's no metering, so it's hit and miss on exposure. The SB-800 will be a necessity. So I'm sure I'll continue using film for indoor shots (weddings, basketball, etc) for several months after I get my D200.

Good luck on that scanning. Let us know how you like that scanner. There are others who have the same thought...

You know I'm a D50 evangelist now, right? The D50 is every bit as good as the D70s in my opinion and the price is right vs. the D200. Beach Camera is selling refurbished D50's at $399. I have bought from Beach several times without any problems. I've seen new D50's as low as $520 at reputable dealers. The cost difference vs. the D200 would easily pay for that SB-800.

I want to get a D200, too, but I'm trying to wait until the price starts dropping like they always do. Now the D50 isn't your F5, but the D50 is better than your N80 IMHO.

By the way, I shot two rolls of film a week ago for the first time in about two years. I'm waiting to get the prints and CDs back. My sister-in-law shot with my camera (N90) some and cou;dn't believe I was using film!

It was Velvia 100F. I have a roll of 400F in the Rebel now working on getting it used so I can see how my deer pics turned out.

Granted, my K1000 may be nearly as old as my wife (she's nearly 11 years younger than me), but I can assure you, I don't use flash pans! ;-)

I did start out with flash cubes for my Kodak 110 camera though. I remember thinking I had reached the big time when I got a 110 with a built in electronic flash!!! :-O

Yes, I've noticed that you've chimed in on a couple of occasions comparing the D50 to the D70. And you're given the D50 rave reviews as well. I've also been advised to get a D50 or a used D70 to get used to the digital workflow, and WB, etc.

That's an impressive testimony! Especially considering that the D50 is cheaper by several hundred dollars.

That's an incredible price! Now that's tempting.

I'm with you there buddy. That's the only redeeming thing about getting one for Christmas - I'm hoping the price will drop by then. The 30D selling for $1400 should help bring the price down some.

On the other hand, there's still a backlog of folks wanting the D200. ASAP Photo in Greenville still has five slips hanging up where folks have already paid their $1700 (plus tax) and are waiting for their camera to come in. (They had nine slips hanging up back in February!) I'm beginning to wonder if Nikon will have caught up with the demand by Christmas!

I was pleasantly surprised when Nikon came out with the F6. Digital is definitely all the rage now, and I'm heading that way, but film is still alive and well, and will be around for a long time to come. Black and white and slide films are seeing an increase in sales, and Half Hour Photo is still doing a booming business processing color film.

Yes, all my photos of my film equipment was taken with a KM Dimage Z2. However if I did get a dSLR at this point I'd buy a Nikon D50, what with Sony now owning the KM camera line.

Thanks Speed. That black BG is a yard of felt I picked up at the store one day. I keep it in my camera bag for a quick macro backdrop. I wanted velvet, but they didn't have any. If I could just find a way to keep it from getting wrinkled in my backback...

Inside our vacant wine refrigerator, I have my rolls of film.

On the left is Fuji Astia 100 for my RZ67, and several rolls of Agfa RSX 200 color tranparency film. I use this film to scan in color and then convert to B&W.

Then I have my beloved, Veliva, Provia, and Velva 100F for my F6.

Not to forget my one roll of Delta 1600...

Of course..all photos taken with a digital D200..go figure.

The one bottle of champage is Vivue Cliqout which we'll drink when our upcoming child is born...just found out this morning!! :)

When I made the switch to digital - 300D - it took me about a year to "let go" of my film camera (Rebel 2K) which I loved.

Even after I finally sold the camera, I kept about 20 rolls of Supra 100 & 400 and the Ilford Delta 100 b&w film in the refrigerator. The Supra had been discontinued and it was such awesome film. It expired, and I finally gave the rest of it away, but it was difficult.

I still love b&w in film.

Personally I've found my digital camera has paid for itself - and my lenses with the option of taking so many images and being able to pick & print. Also my photography has improved immensely for the same reasons.

Hey Ray,

Technically, I've been shooting some digital for a couple of years now with the Coolpix 5700. But come Christmas, I'm getting into digital big time, with a D200.

But all the way? Naw. I love my film too much. I forsee shooting less print film, and primarly shooting slides once I get the D200. We'll see.

I know cameras today come with a "saturated" mode, or a "very saturated" mode, or a "super saturated" mode. And apparently they still aren't the same as Velvia, otherwise Outdoor Photographer wouldn't be writing articles on "How To" get the Velvia look - via Photoshop.

Haven't tried out all the modes "in-camera" yet but I like what I see so far. My post production time is way down already.

True enough about the SB-800. I had to get one. The on-camera flash is ok for snapshots, but nothing near the capabilities of the SB-800. I would highly recommend it.

Also, haven't done a reveiw since I have barely scratched the surface..... but lovin every minute of it.

BTW, what I thought was going to be a "body only" purchase turned into:

body + kit lense
+ 3 year protection
+ SB-800
+ upgrade to CS2 (so it could read the raw files) - but man CS2 is the greatest!

Hehehe!

Which is part of why I've put off going digital so long. All the associated costs. I knew I'd need a new computer, compact flash cards, SB-800, and I figure on upgrading to PS Elements 4.0.

That is also why I'm spreading it out over a year or so.

But Christmas still seems like such a LONG time away!
