    Little Help Speed

I have no idea what I'm doing here. I was coming home tonight about 9:30 and saw this scene in the sky and knew I had to try something. I know you have given us a formula of sorts before, but I went blank. Got home and got the camera on the tripod and just started firing away. I want to be prepared next time. What should I have done? Your help would be appreciated Speed if you can tear yourself away from the Hokey-Pokey circle. I know it's Friday night and you are out doing the Hokey-Pokey somewhere, but when you get a chance please help.

Thanks for the kind comments, but it was blind luck on this one. I did a lot of trial and error, next time I'd like to get it right the from the get go.

I have been there. Can't even begin to tell you how many times that I have messed up on moon shots in the past.

You did nail this one perfectly! You've got Earthshine on the "dark" part of the moon, and the leaves in the foreground frame it perfectly. Also, that bright "star" you got in the lower right is the planet Venus. Awesome capture!

As for the formula, it's nothing fancy. Use the "Sunny f16 rule". Set the apeture at f16 and the shutter speed at 1/ISO. For 100 speed, use f16 at 125th of a second. For 400 speed, use f16 at 500th of a second. Any equivalent apeture/shutter speed combination will work.

Next step, brackett! With the digital camera, it's quick and easy to check to see if you got what you wanted. If the images are over-exposed, try sunny f22. Nothing fancy or complicated. Just pretend you're using a manual film camera on a sunny day! This will get you in the ballpark, and save you from shooting quite as many frames.

Congratulations again on a superb capture!
