The Lister Block was built in 1929 at the intersection of James St and King Williams St in Hamilton, ON. Built on the site of the older Lister Chambers which earlier in the year had burnt down. Joseph Lister, the owner, wanted something a little more fire proof. Enter the Lister Block, from 1929 until 1994 it was a major retail and professional space. But when it's doors were closed it became something different, the figure head for Hamilton's decline.
I first walked her halls in 2006. Over the next two years I made several visits, ways in would be sealed, new ways would open up, many nights sitting up on the roof. And then...in 2009 she began to be restored, I managed to get in once in the early phases of restoration, and then decided to leave her in peace, and let the people do their work. And then this year for Doors Open Hamilton, I was allowed back in. Legally this time around. So I quickly went back to my old shots of the Block, and made notes, and made sure I tried to capture the same angles I had before.
Lister Block, Before, After, and sometimes in between.
