Is this just a tad unsettling?

Maybe it's me and after actually watching the WTC be hit by planes, I just looked at the winning photo on betterphoto.com and well, you can probably imagine my thoughts when I saw this winning photo...

I think it's a reflection of the Blue Angels skill level.

My best friend's brother was a Blue Angel, ending his service a year or so ago. He was number #8. Having been to several of the Blue Angel performances this picture is a true reflection of the skill these individuals have.

I cannot say that the picture is unsettling to me. I work for Citigroup, and many of the people that work in NY were scrambling for their lives. So 9/11 is something that is close to me too. At the time, I was a Citigroup client calling the office when the tragic event happened.

It also helps to know that when they fly at Seattle it's over the sound and not over downtown, which is how it looks in this photo, but that's because he photoshoped the planes in there. The planes should be over the water in a real event.

I suppose it might strike me if the guy had photoshopped in a jetliner flying through downtown Seattle, but the photo doesn't give me the impression that the Blue Angels are attacking the Space Needle. I mean, military planes do a lot of flyovers over events and stuff in cities, so a photo of the Blue Angels (even when they are photoshopped in) flying in formation over a city doesn't really seem odd to me. Just my feelings though...

I don't know how to put this, but...I'm kind of a big deal...People know me.

    Janie,

While I see why you might find it unsettling, I agree with the others. Regulations do not allow demonstrations over a city proper like this. Also, military pilots are precision pilots. Flying though a town of skyscrapers would not be a cause of alarm for the general public (or at least it shouldn't be).

While I've never been heavy into photoshop, and don't know how to create a photo like that (OK, I know layers are involved), I've never had the desire to modify any of my photo's like that either.

The photographer stated that he wanted to give the photo some "interest", but why he chose to place the Blue Angels below the skyscrapers instead of above them is beyond me. Different strokes for different folks I guess. "Artistic license" I believe it is called.

I'm with Speed on this one. I'm surprised that a contest winner could be a composite image (is that the right term?) unless the contest specifically was for that.

Ya, actually what I find unsettling is that a blatantly PS'd image won, or got second anyways, in what appears to be a standard photo contest. It's fine if PS'd images have their own category but come on... this is a more blatant PS job IMO than the iraq photo that the photog got fired over...

On a side note, I don't know if fly over rules are city, region or country specific. I do however remember clearly working in downtown Toronto for a design agency. The friday before the air show we headed for the roof of the 5 story building which was about a quarter mile from the lake. Over head 4 F16's did an intial low and over then a return pass out to the lake with afterburners kicked in as they came over us. It sounded like every car alarm in the surround parking lots was crying mercy after the jet engine noise cleared from our collective heads. Damn coolest thing I ever seen and it was over a populated area too!

I think the bigger story here (as others mentioned) is that a composite photo won a photography award/competition.

The terms and coditions don't state any restricttions as to how the image is created.
I think the tittle "Rocketship Boom" was just the order of appearance. Boom meaning sonic boom, which is why they only go that fast over water(no windows to break). I can certainly unerstand why it could be unsettling, but its not to me.
I don't think its all that great, but I like it.
