    Jealous

Okay, I know these aren't sports photographs but this is the only forum I post to and you guys are the only ones that know me and if I posted this someplace else people would think I'm nuts.
I know you're going to be extremely jealous of this assignment I was given this morning.
I went to a dairy farm in southern Wisconsin that has over 3,000 dairy cows and they produce alot of milk. The assignment was about how they recycle waste materials (yes, here it comes) thereby, saving money and the enviroment.
In the first photo we have the happy dairy cow that eats plenty of food every day. Of course, all these cows produce alot of waste and I mean alot of waste. In photo two the waste is dumped into a pit where it is sent through a series of filters, pipes, etc. and then into a press. In photo three it shows the waste where all of the liquid has been squeezed out. The waste, which is now a nice fertilizer, gets shipped out where it is spread over fields while the water from the waste is recycled through a series of filters to the point where it is potable again and can be seen in the before and after photo number four.
Amazing operation that saves a bundle and is very green so the farm should be commended.
The problem now is.......anyone know how to get the smell out of my 1D Mark IIN???

    Re: Jealous

just what I needed to see

I would wipe the camera with a moist towel, probably use some of the solution to clean the lenses, and hopefully the smell goes away

    Re: Jealous

Put it in a cardboard box filled with crumpled newspapers and an open box of baking soda. Leave it overnight and that probably will do the trick. If that doesn't work, get some activated charcoal at your local drugstore. This will probably come in capsules. Open up the capsules and set the powder inside a sealed up box with your camera. WARNING: Don't get the charcoal on your clothes or camera as it is hard or impossible to get the stain out - and you sure don't want the stuff in your camera!

    Re: Jealous

I was actually kidding about my camera stinking but thanks for the advice as I'll keep it in mind for future reference. After shooting sports for years and being in stinky locker rooms and having sweat dripped on it, it's stunk plenty of times before.

Awesome - now we have a professional poo photographer on the site. Congratulations, I believe you're the first

And yeah, I am moving this thread. It really doesn't belong on the sports forum. And I think it will get plenty of interest on Viewfinder

You are a courageous person! I don't know how you were able to spend any length of time here! At any rate, you did a great job - the pics are sharp and quite vivid! You can almost smell the aroma!

Thanks for posting. I did enjoy viewing the shots - and reading the story.

I love that first pic, btw.

Well! Those are certainly some fine photos of a rather surprising subject matter. As for jealousy - heck, you got a paying gig, regardless of the situation - so of that, yes, I'm jealous! Good work.

Absolutely. And an interesting one at that. I would have been very interested in that job

    Re: Jealous

Okay. So put yourself in the box with the crumpled newspapers. That was a stinky joke!

    Re: Jealous

I'm glad PJ moved this to viewfinder so the rest of us could get to know you.
I used to do the milking at a medium dairy and my favorite part after the production crew was gone was to wash the headquarters down with a fire hose. Nothing as fancy as yours, but brought back memories.
I've never been in a barn or on a farm that smells bad.

    Re: Jealous

Great little series there Chris. I grew up around dairy farms and some of the ways they have used over the years to get rid of the waste have not been nearly as green as the one you pictured. Must say they smell a lot better than a hog farm does.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

I like the smell of a farm. It's a rich, earthy smell. It may be strong, but I don't think it's bad. Stockyards smell terrible, though. I like meat and think it's good for me. But driving past a big stockyard always makes me think a bit more about the reality of my food choices.

I can imagine but don't want to. Even butchering a dozen chickens is pretty bad.
I'm with you on why farms smell good.
