What to charge?

I followed up on a suggestion by Liz to contact the insurance group who's reflecting glass panels I shot and posted here in Critique under the title "Reflections". I emailed them this afternoon and told them I had the shot, and were they interested in possibly purchasing it either for their website, or as something to hang in their business. What I need to know (this is my first attempt at something of this nature, so any help is appreciated) is what would be a fair price to charge for non-exclusive use on their website, or perhaps as an 11 X 14 framed for hanging.

Good for you for trying, and it looks like you might have a deal. I'd say that a print that they can hang in their office is one use (for art, not advertising) but use on their website and/or in printed catalogs would be something completely different. You might find out exactly what their intent is with this image. I'm sure others here could be more help...

John, I'm waiting for the more experienced PR members to answer your question. I want to know strategy in this as well. I've only sold wedding shots but never anything like your situation. Let me give my 2 cent assumption on how might go about this. Just food for thought:

First of all assign yourself an hourly rate.
Calculate the time invloved in taking the picture x houry rate
Calculate the time involved in post production x hourly rate
Calculate print cost x 3 or 4
Calculate mounting cost (if applicable)
Calculate delivery or all travel cost

Add it all up and make sure you have a profit of more that +100% your initial expense.

If you are giving full rights/ownership to the client then double/triple your estimate and remember never to sell or use the photo commercially again. Plus give them the original RAW or JPG.

Just an idea but I hope the more experience players will give the real deal.

Change the number of billable days a year from 1 to someting more realistic!

I tried that, lets see what I should charge if I worked 1 day a year. LOL, I wish!
