An "I like this even though I shouldn't" thread

Okay, so we all probably have shots like this. Maybe you totally botched it-- bad exposure, focus is off. Maybe something in the shot changed just as you took it (I know I have a lovely shot of a black and white warbler, except for the fact he decided to go to the bathroom right as I took it). Maybe it just is a shot that all the rules of photography tell you it should be bad... and of course, you like it. Sometimes for reasons you can't even properly explain.

So let's have a thread and share these "mistakes" and see if anyone else likes them as well.

This was a botched focus. My intent was to have her eyes in focus, instead I got the nose and the plant... and I like it anyway

ooooh SOOO many botched shots to choose from.

I saw this this shot...I SAW IT! I took it and the execution of it was less than desirable. However, for some reason I still like it. I love that bubble of light around her.

This is another botched shot that I like. It reminds me of another image that I have seen but I just can't place it. Over sharp, lens blur, but still, there is something striking about it. Dunno. I might be crazy ;)

    CaraRose,

What a wonderful idea for a thread! Now we can post all of those pictures we have always wanted to share with someone, but...............didn't.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

    Liz

Hawk outside my bedroom window. YIKES!

This image is soft - so disappointed. However it has a story: I was on the phone and just happened to look out my bedroom window and this hawk was sitting in a tree just about 10 feet away from the window. I had a slow lens on the camera and knew I couldn't use the flash, so I quickly and quietly (window was open) put on a longer, faster zoom (not IS). The next obstacle was the fact that the screen was in the windowI knew if I raised the screen, undoubtedly the hawk would leave, but I did it anyway - and he stayed. So I then quietly approached the window with my camera, when Molly the Cat discovered the hawk and "flew" toward the window (no screen remember). I grabbed her, but she was struggling to go get that hawk. So, I knew I had to work fast. Holding Molly back with one arm, I managed to get about 4 shots before he took off! I was disappointed it was soft and tried my best to sharpen it, but at any rate, I did get the shot. I love this photo.

I think I posted this a few years ago, and Paul from NJ (Nature forum) told me that Molly wouldn't stand a chance with the hawk. She would have been the hawk's dinner!

Re: An "I like this even though I shouldn't" thread

I love the framing on that shot, Liz.

Nicci... my brother once told me, many years ago, about how he saw the spirit of Jerry Garcia flow into Trey Anastasio of Phish during a concert. I don't know how high my brother was when he saw this, or how high he was as he told me this, but you're halo shot made me think of it

Another from me. Way too soft. Actually I think this may fall into the category of "blurry." But I love the look on the tiger's face, and it makes me think of some old circus photo.

    I'll play -- I ain't skeered!

This was one of my first posts in my main hangout -- the Critique Forum. Didn't get any response as I recall -- I decided either most people didn't "see" what I did -- or nobody knew me well enough then to say "that stinks and you're crazy." In reality, probably everybody was out Christmas shopping or whatever. Anyway, I still like it. It reminds me of the Grinch.

Lovin' the pics and the stories behind them!

Re: An "I like this even though I shouldn't" thread

What a great thread with some really neat shots!

Cara: I love that photo, and I love it because the eyes aren't in focus and the nose is. I think it allows the viewer to connect the fawn's experience a bit more. I don't think she cared too much about anything other than the plant right at that moment. So for what it's worth, I think it's much neater the way it turned out. It gives her a lot more character. I guess it can become a question on intent on the part of the photographer. Are you trying to capture her experience or your own?

Re: An "I like this even though I shouldn't" thread

The story behind the picture...I was riding in the passenger seat of a friends rig while traveling through the Big Hole country in SW Montana. I hadn't noticed this guy perched on the fence post until the last moment, so I swung the camera up and push my friend back and shot across the front of him and out his window. The only thing remotely close to in focus in the bird's vent, but I can't bring myself to delete this image. Maybe because of what it could have been, I don't know, but I still like it!

    I make a LOT of mistakes - who doesn't

I delete nearly all of them in camera but I shot one this past weekend that I couldn't delete and I thought of this thread.

Focus on the wrong dog, paws cut off, one dog's face missing, ugly fence shadow cutting across everything... but I still like it. Only got this one shot off. Uncropped.

OK, I was visiting a friend whose yard more closely resembled a construction yard with all the junk laying around. Anyway, I spotted this cat as it leaped onto this commode and struck this pose. The cat only stayed there for a second, so I had to move fast. Luckily, I had an old 2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 2100 in hand and ready to go.
I called this "A well trained kitty". I really shouldn't like it, but it appealed to my sense of humor.

Something of a learning shot for me the light bulb came on with this shot. When shooting close ups I should go with a smaller AV. I was also playing with some cokin filters that I haven't shot with.
