Looks like I'll be buying a new digi point & shoot!
Bummer, Rick. Hey look at the bright side; at least it wasn't the medium format.

Srobb, yes, I was gripping the 645 tightly when the p&s digi slipped off my leg and tumbled into the canyon, breaking into pieces as it went and almost knocking a local at the bottom on the head. I felt pretty bad, about the camera and almost killing the lady.
Now I have my camera phone to take snaps with and I already have my next p&s digi picked out. I'll be buying it new on Ebay!

Ouch. I can almost feel my gut dropping 150 feet with the camera thinking about it.

Good Grief Rick! What was your first thought? The camera? Or the poor lady you almost killed! I just couldn't resist that one!
Was the P&S the same one you had in NY? I believe it was a Nikon Coolpix or something similar. I remember you really loved the P&S you had with you then - and I still have (and love) that picture you shot of me in the tunnel.
We had such a good time that day.........
I seldom use my P&S that I purchased for a 2nd camera because I can't put my 350XT down. I have a Panasonic DMC FZ3 which is a really nice camera with IS. It was a little more than $200 and takes great pics (a little tough in low light though).
I hope you get a new one soon - the prices of P&S cameras have gotten amazingly less expensive this past year.

Actually, it was the camera AND THEN the poor lady it almost killed (it took a while to actually get to the bottom of the canyon)
Liz, you have a great memory Yes, it was exactly that same little Coolpix that I had at NY with you and the gang. I'm glad you're still enjoying that shot. "Industrial Cloister" I think is what Megan called it?
I had that camera for about 2 years. It served me well. The funny part was just the night before we were at an outdoor concert and I was getting frustrated with it because it was too slow in capturing moments on stage. Be careful what you ask for I guess, the next morning it took a swan dive off into a canyon!
The good timing part is that my birthday is in about a month so I am getting a replacement as a present. Can't complain about that You're right, the prices have gone down and the features have gone up. My next will be a big step up for only a fraction more than I spent on the last one. I'll be sure to let you know when I get it and then hopefully I can take another picture of you with it... in Arizona (sometime before 2010!)

It sounds like you have a good plan - I'll look forward to seeing your new camera - and the photos! "Industrial Cloister" that's it! THAT I couldn't remember.......I almost called it "Tunnel Cloister" but somehow that didn't sound as good.

I'm soooo sorry to hear that, walterick!! What a tragic end to a camera!
I hope you enjoy your new camera, though!

Skip the PS - get a D50, my man. You can find them for a little or $400 now and they rock.
I have my newest Coolpix coming on monday. The Coolpix 7900 has 7.1 mp, an ED f2.8-4.9 lens and does unlimited movie recording at 30 fps. At $260 new, it's half the cost of my previous Coolpix 885 and twice the features.
The reason I need a digital camera at all is to be able to take snap shots without burning through rolls of film. For quicky p&s stuff, I like my digital. For everything else, it's film all the way baby!
A DSLR would just add bulk and weight to my already burgeoning backpack. And, they don't yet fit neatly into coat pockets
