how not to carry a lens?

Like this, on a blackrapid strap with no cover over the mount.
Just asking for dust in the body, on the sensor ...

Yah, um, did you point out to the guy that his rear cap must have come off? I can't see anyone intentionally doing that.. But then again, I'm grateful for everything I own and use, and try to treat it accordingly. That's just odd...

Re: how not to carry a lens?

So sad, that's one of my 'dream lenses' that I'm saving up for and this guy has it dangling carelessly from a hook with no caps.... That's a bummer.

I guess I'm being judgemental but like Noknees said, I cherish all my equipment and am thankful I can afford what I've got. I treat my nifty-fifty like it's an L.

SW, when I first saw this I couldn't believe my eyes. Either this guy is rolling in dough, or he's...well I don't even want to say. As the previous posters have said, I am grateful that I can afford every piece of equipment I own and I treat it accordingly. I almost wish there were camera police when I see something like this - still shaking my head in disbelief...this is so wrong, in so many ways...NoKnees, I think more than his "rear cap" must have come off...

Perhaps it's a pool lens and he doesn't care.

Or perhaps it's a rental and he still doesn't care.

Either way, the bottom line is he still should care, no matter who's it is... But hey, that's just me... I'm strange like that... I blame my parents...

Re: how not to carry a lens?

I've seen pros with 600mm primes on monopods just dump them on the ground when changing lenses, no caps, and wander off with a different lens.
I suppose at F1 testing there aren't many other people trackside, so the equipment is safe, but at Jerez it was rather dusty and I'm sure they needed cleaning before use.
Dust reduction in-camera does't mean total dust invulnerability!

Re: how not to carry a lens?

I lost my front lens cap off my 24-105mm today somewhere at the botanic gardens. Hated hated having to put it away without a cap on. Since I stopped using filters I'm pretty obsessive about putting the lens cap on when not using it. Ordering a front cap tonight.

I can't imagine not keeping a rear cap on. As it is the rear element of my 300mm has dust on it and I'm not sure how to get it off. My weak little blower isn't doing much and since the element is recessed into the lens I can't clean it with a lens tissue. Argh.

Cara - get a lens pen. I've been using them for years and it works even for tough smudges and getting into recessed areas.

I wonder how you got this rather intimate shot.

Walked past him, zoomed the lens as I walked, turned round and shot.
I doubt he spotted me taking it.
After all it was in the middle of the Focus on Imaging show - almost everyone was carrying a camera.
