how to manage picture taking on overseas tour

    1. I will be going overseas on a tour in approx 6 mos, and will be taking along a digi cam with memory cards for recording things of interest on the trip. I haven't flown in a long time.

Are there any issues between airport scanning/screening devices which might corrupt photo images on the memory cards?

If so, are there protections available for the cards which will prevent screening processes corruption or loss?

    2. Are there any viewers available that I could periodically look at my photos for quality control on? Since we'll be on the move during the tour a lot, most of my shots will be taken for later viewing/review. It would be nice to be able to view my days take at the end of the day without doing it in the camera. I'd rather not waste the camer battery power viewing a bunch of photos one at a time.

I do not believe there is any danger to memory cards from airport scanners. Indeed, several photo mags I get have said exactly this. So don't worry. In any case, take your camera (and cards) on as hand luggage - the scanners are less powerful than the big ones they use for hold luggage.

Someone else will have to help you with the other question! I know there are various portable viewing devices that let you upload files from your camera, but these are pretty pricy I think.

You don't say where you are going - but if it is in the "civilised" world, you would probably have access to power points for recharging batteries etc. This is what I do.

    Cheers

You shouldn't have any problems with your memory cards, and airport screening devices.

For portable storage and viewing, you could get an Epson P-3000. They are kind of expensive, but from what I'fve heard, people seem to be very happy with them. They use to make a P-2000 but I think it's been discontinued. You may be able to find one of those even cheaper, but I'm not sure how much storage they have.

Here is a link to the P-3000.

A laptop is always an option too, but they take up a lot of room compaired to somthing like the Epson device.

For storage, an Epson P3000 is overkill, and for viewing its screen isn't big enough.
Depends on where you're going and how you're travelling - I'd take a laptop for viewing and archive, with a good size HD of 120GB or more. Plus a backup device for saving your photos so you can reuse memory cards - I use the XSDriveII which does not show photos, only store them.

Never heard of any problems. The strongest x-rays are in checked baggage (at least here in the US) but I'd carry my memory cards in my carry-on bag anyway.

Whatever devices you use will use power in one way or another and since you already have a viewing device with the camera that's what I'd stay with. Memory cards are very inexpensive now compared to a year or two ago, and it was only a few years ago when it might have been cheaper to buy a laptop instead of a dozen gigs of compact flash cards. That's not the case anymore, but a laptop with CD or DVD burner would still be a good thing to have for storing, backing up and viewing.

Just remember USA Customs will seize any non-commercial CD or DVD, due to the record companies :-( They don't care that the media only contains your priceless photos.

Mike, "the civilized" world and "non-civilized" world are all the same, it actually is somewhat easier to get things through in the uncivilized areas (trust me i know....although Lebanon and the UAE are considered civilized as far as i have seen)

As for the airports, cell phones are passed (over here anyway) next to the scanners and not through.... you could place you cards there....

For viewing and storage....your best bet is the Laptop, with a hefty HD or an External HD...

    Draconian indeed....LOL
