    Lake Tahoe - Flume Trail

Jenni and I are at Lake Tahoe for a few days. Yesterday we rode the Flume Trail, possibly the most beautiful mountain bike ride in the world. Tourists do a short version of this ride via a shuttle service. We did the man-sized ride - a big loop that tops out well above 8000 feet. We were on the trail about 6 hours. That's the longest ride I can remember right now.

The Flume Trail proper is a flat, exposed trail hanging above the lake. It's really beautiful and very accessible. All kinds of people ride and hike it. The photo of Jenni and I was taken at the highest point in the ride. I'm not sure what the altitude is. But Marlett Lake, the close one below us, is at 7800 feet. Lake Tahoe, in the background is about 6500, I think.

If the color or density on these photos look a little off, it's because I'm working on my laptop right now. I don't trust the laptop screen, even if it is calibrated

    Camera Gear

This is a photography site, right? Camera gear was my Canon EOS 7D and the Canon EF-S 18-200mm IS zoom lens. I carried it in the hydration-equipped Clik Elite Medium Nature dedicated camera pack.

    Glad you like the photos

The mountains in the photos of Jenni riding are on the west side of the lake, in California. In the photo of the two of us, I think the peaks might be in Nevada. Our whole ride was in Nevada.

The trail is in NV and the far side is Desolation Wilderness, CA.

Nice shots. Look forward to being in the ones you post Monday!

It was great to finally ride with you, Mike. Here's a photo of some singlespeed freak who showed up to ride with us on Sunday. I have to say, Hole In The Ground would not be my first choice for a singlespeed trail. Over and over I found myself saying, "I don't remember this,..." and "this is way more technical than I remember..."

You know. It's not that bad for SS. The climbs aren't that steep for the most part. And then for the rest of the trail, you don't get all that chainslap noise.

Good riding with you too. Wish I could have stayed longer and hit dinner too. I had to get home and make googoo faces @ Bowie. The kid is needy.

He enjoyed meeting you and Jenni too. He quit shaving and started talking about tattoos...

Funny, living here (there ) I found myself riding the flume so much that I got bored with it and haven't ridden it in about five years. Your pics make me want to get my butt back up there and on that trail. There is just so many tourist free trails on the North Shore that I often forget about the other stuff. Hole in the Ground is great. Haven't ridden it yet this year though.

I know what you mean about Flume. I hadn't ridden Flume or HITG for almost 10 years. But Jenni hadn't ridden either so it was obvious what needed to be done. Next trip we'll start exploring more

Here's one of Jenni and some wildflowers back on the Red House section of the Long Flume ride.

What a beautiful looking place and "sure, I could do that" I keep telling myself.

Too bad I get a buttcramp taking the kids down suburbian streets with my "mountain bike" for a couple slushies.
