Mr. & Mrs. Devente - Wedding Photos

I shot a wedding this weekend. It was my second wedding ever. The setting was beautiful. Here's a few shots I liked, and then there's a couple of links to the full gallery of images online. What do you think? Feel free to comment - positive or negative feedback is welcome.

    Shot with Canon 10D - Sigman 70-200 f2.8 EX and a Canon 28-105 3.5-4.5

    This one made me laugh.

    Re: My Second Wedding

No, they're great shots! Just a lot of them to take in, I think ;)

I REALLY like the B/W shot of the four mean walking the road. I'm assuming that would be the groom, his father and brothers/best man. The shot makes for a great statement about family and father/son relationships.

I also like the shot of the exchange of rings. With the flower girl in the background it gives almost a "beginning of things to come" feel.

Outstanding shots, but then again, your shots are always outstanding... makes me jealous

    Re: My Second Wedding

I got a little carried away with posting them here ;) Sorry.

Thanks for the comments and compliments, I appreciate them greatly. The property was really spread out, so I ran ahead of the groomsmen when they were on their way to the location we intended to shoot. They were all funny as hell, and were doing a great job of keeping the groom calm. - I laughed so hard when I saw the first pic I posted here. They were done with pics and headed back to the holding spot - I told them I might be shooting some pictures as they left (the same as when they came in). If you look closely, you'll see that the bride's brother is grabbing the groom's butt (far left).

    Thanks again.

Yeah, I vote for that shot being enlarged, matted and framed and hung above the fireplace.

If it were my shot, I'd be waiting anxiously to see the family's reaction to it. Sounds like they'd be the type to really appreciate it.

I always love shots that have a deeper value to them than just the image itself, and you've got some good ones here.

    Re: My Second Wedding

Nice work, Andy. The shots all have a good feel to them so to speak. The one thing I see in a lot of them is that they're pretty tight compositions - something that generally works well. And they do work well here, but the problem might come with printing.

Full frame would be 8x12 but most people print 8x10 and it might be difficult to chop 2" total from the long side of the shot. Same thing with other standard print sizes, 11x14, 5x7, 16x20, etc. Most non-photo people don't think about this and whatever lab they use (unless you're doing all of their prints) might just chop 1" from each side for an 8x10 - some that will work but some it won't.

Try to shoot a little looser to give you more cropping options later. Doesn't take much, just a few mm of focal length will do it, and that's minor enough that you won't have to worry about resolution, etc. I'm assuming these are full frame shots though, guess I should ask that first...

Excellent point, AV - I didn't think much about it, but you're exactly right. BTW, none of these have been cropped at all. That's how I composed them in the camera.

I think the guys have it :)

The first guys shot made me laugh, too. That's hilarious! Just stop saying it made you laugh when you got it back - that makes it sound like you didn't see it that way when you took it ;)

I like the other one of the guys second best of all. They all have a nice feel to them, Andy, though for my own personal taste they're a little too fuzzy/soft sometimes. I know that's a look you're going for but to me it's a little much.

The ones of the little girl are classics. The one of the ring exchange is also nice, heads up to catch the little girl in the background! It makes me think that if she had been focus, it would've made for an interesting shot as well.

Overall, way to be in the right locations and good job getting the shots!

    Re: My Second Wedding

I learned that the first wedding (the cropping issue) when I tried to print a few...

I like how casual this wedding was and it translated into the pictures. I think you have some fun shots and you captured the personality of a lot of the people especially when they're pelting them with bird seed or rice or whatever... I love the ones of the flower girl by herself and the woman signing the picture. I have to agree with Rick...my preferance(sp?) with these is to have them a bit less soft...but I think you did well (being the second wedding) and I hope to do as well in January when I do my second one.

Thanks, Nat - Thanks Old Timer. I appreciate your remarks.

On the softness issue - The client hired me based on my other "soft" shots, so I had to give them at least a few - and these are a little less soft looking when they haven't been crunched down for the web.

All of these are outstanding. Don't you love it when everything comes together? Weather, wedding couple, location etc......... I think you did a fabulous job, and your post processing is excellent. I soften alot of my images too, whe? becuase that's what my clients like, and that's why they pay me big $$. It's whoever hands over the cheque that is expert.

Thank you, Sir. And, you're right - it's what the client wants - that's what I do.

And, about the weather - it was a completely overcast, almost gloomy day - shortly after the wedding reception ended, a thunderstorm to beat all thunderstorms blew in. Of course, you couldn't tell it from the pictures - and that made me smile.

Andy I think these are amazing. They do have the very romantic dreamy wedding feel. Hit it right on!

Not much of a critique but just a compliment. The idea of taking pictures like the kindthat you come out with is what makes me love photography. Beautiful images :-)
