Good news!

After years and years of watching and waiting, I am finally getting a film scanner for Christmas

GONE are the days of getting my slides printed so I can later scan the prints!.

Now you all will finally get to see all the beauitful Velvia sildes I have been shooting over the years but didn't have a convenient way to digitize. You'll also get to see the medium format shots I've been taking recently.

I am going to be hooking mine back up (or rather, my dh is) sometime this week. I've got a roll I'm shooting right now, and some black and white I'm excited about.

What kind are you getting? I just got the coolscan v which can't do the medium format (which I have a bunch)

It takes a while to get used to - that is for sure but it opens up a whole new way of doing things to past photos and using slide film in the future.

just scanned some slides from 1964 and they look great!

you are going to have a lot of fun - does this mean I can send my MF negatives to you to scan for me

Wes I haven't picked out a model yet. I just got the news the other day I thought that the Coolscan V did have 120 capability so I better get cracking on the research thang.

That's great, Rick! Getting my first film scaner made a huge difference for me. You'll save money, you'll get to turn stuff around faster, and the quality will improve. I'm psyched to see more and better photos from you here.

Now I'm thinking, if you or anyone else here can post their opinions of dedicated film scanners they have used, it will help me tremendously as I begin reading reviews here on PR and doing web research. Objective and subjective measures are welcome.

And just incase "Santa" can't swing a dedicated film scanner with 120 capacity, a quality flatbed film scanner you've used would be nice to know as well.

But, you must be warned ! I spoke with the local owner of a "pro" print shop here. She informed me that people who use film are wasting time and money, getting bad prints, they are stupid, etc...

She also informed me that noone makes anything but 800iso film now, and that because I use film, I was 15 years behind. To that I replied, really? Then pulled 3 rolls of film from my pocket, Kodak 400uc, Fujifilm Superia 200, and tri-x 200, put the film back, and said, Van Gogh was nearly a century ahead, since I am behind, maybe I will live to see fame!

Looked at your gallery, and can't wait to see more either, congrats again!

It sounds like you are looking for one that does both 35mm and 120?
I have the Epson 4180. It's a flatbed but it does both.
I like it a lot.

Hi Rick!

Good for you! My film scanner has become an indispensable peace of hardware too me. I currently own two: the Canoscan 4000 (that Santa may still be able to get from Ebay), and the new Dimage 5400 II. Both give high res results, but the Dimage 5400 is the clear winner in terms of software, color accuracy, AND DYNAMIC RANGE. However, it is just for 35mm.

There are some nice reviews on Ken Rockwell's web site concerning film scanners. He speaks highly of the Epson 4990.

I hope to add a review on PR about the Dimage soon enough.

I have the canon fs2720, I don't know if you can find it anymore, but it does the job for me. Color accuracy isn't an issue, but I haven't used it in 2 yrs, so I guess we'll see how it looks after shooting digital for 2 yrs.

Will I am glad to know that your slides will be getting proper treatment and we get to see your slides in better resolution and color.

What scanner did you/will get?


Beware of the velvia scanning learning curve, but it's worth it!!! btw.. I just got back from Mexico and shot with Velvia 50 and 100. Will be getting them back tomorrow, and hopefully have some scanned shortly after. It's nice to have Velvia brothers and sisters on the forum.

I have some say in what Santa brings me, so we're working together covertly to pick one out. What scanner do you use? You also shoot 6x7 don't you?

What is your impression of the Velvia 100? I bought a few rolls from B&H but haven't given it a shot yet. I hear it's an improvement over 50.

Hey Rick,

I use the Nikon 8000, and I really love it. It does great for 35mm, and medium format. I don't buy any other software for it since the Nikon scan software is great, imho.

As for Velvia 100, I will never shoot Velvia 50 after I get done with the last 15 rolls that I have. I like the extra stop of speed, and the color and grain are awesome. Also easier to scan. It's the best of Velvia and Provia put together.

If you scan a lot of slides, get one that has a slide holder. If you have to scan one slide at a time you will go nuts.

And the three rolls of Ilford Delta 100 B&W I just picked up on last Wednsday. I have used the Provia 100F before and was very pleased with the results I got from it. Have read some very good reviews on the new Velvia 100, also.

Congrads, Rick - I look forward to seeing more work soon. The Coolscan V does a great job (friend has one) but it is 35mm only. You'd need either the 8000 (which isn't made anymore) or the 9000 to do 35mm and medium format.

Time to start looking at alternatives.

Congrats Rick!!! I have had my eye on the Dimage 5400 II for a while now, but just haven't been able to pull the trigger. New tires on my truck, motorcycle for my girlfriend, diamond ring in the very near future... Needless to say, my photo equipment purchases have come to an end, temporarily. I still might get an extra bulk roll of Velvia 50 before it's gone for good, wich will give me even more reason to get a scanner.

This link has very indepth reviews of scanners, including the Epson 4990. I bought the 4870 after reading about it there. I am satisfied with 35mm scans from it.
There are reviews of dedicated film scanners, not sure if they are mf compatible.

Update:

After looking through the reviews here, Santa thinks that a dedicated film scanner may have to wait until I've achieved Sainthood. In the meantime...

Thanks Steph for the Ken Rockwell nod. I read his review of the 4990 and it looks pretty good. I'll start doing some more research into the Epson line and see what I can convince Santa of. I had no idea how pricey dedicated 120 film scanners were! $$$$

Here's hopin I can still astound you all with my flatbed film scans as I would have with my dedicated film scans.

Oh who am I kidding you guys love me either way.
