    Glacier NP

I had the privilege of visiting Glacier this summer. I wish I had a week instead of a day and a half.

Look at how clear that water is in the first and what a sky in the second and oh that stream looks refreshing in the third.
As per my signature......where have all the glaciers gone?

Very little left of the...ahem Glaciers left in Glacier NP. These were taken in my early days with Lightroom, and I accidentally left it convert the photos to .dng. Any photos that I let that happen to get a really blotchy sky like in #3. I don't know anything about .dng but since I've changed it to leave them .crw, the quality of the sky has returned.

Glacier NP has been on my must see for a long time. Your great photos just reinforce my desire to see this wonderful American park.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Same here! Always wanted to go to GNP and Yellowstone at some point in my life. OT, if you end up going, save room for me in your suitcase

Lovely shots EOS. I particularly like the 1st and 2nd shots. So peaceful and tranquil. I'm very jealous

Glacier was on our list for a long time too. Finally this summer the wife and I made the trip. It was pretty nice, but not our favorite NP. It was still worth the visit.

You can see some of my Glacier pics by clicking on the link to my website in my signature. Click on Vacation Pics. The first half of that gallery is all from Glacier, and the surrounding area. The pics after the old red tour buses are from the Tetons and Yellowstone.

    Re: Glacier NP

Mike, you must have had a lot of time for vacation. Very nice photographs most of which were taken at the edge of light. That means a lot of early mornings and late evenings. You had some really nice skies too, it seems when I have the opportunity to get out to take some photos I've got bluebird or ugly gray overcast.
My summer is booked up with work, and work only allows me a 2 day weekend in 12 days. When my weekend comes most of the time I just want to laze around and do nothing, I certainly don't feel like waking up at 4am to get out before morning light. Although as it happens I did get up at 4am in Glacier and drove up the Going to the Sun Road and was stopped at one of the tunnels about 1/3 of the way up for road construction. I gave up and went back to Hungry Horse and went back to bed. I wish I had the time to stay for about a month.
I hope to get to Yellowstone some time this winter, and maybe Jackson.

That's the thing people not into photography don't understand - it takes a long time for a lot of reasons to get the shot! Plenty of days like that...

Yeah, I love it when people see a photo and say, "you were in the right place and the right time". Well, yes, I was, but the reason I was there, is because I was in the same place at the WRONG time, many times before that.

EOS, that second one is breathtaking. I would love to someday visit that park too, but at over 900 miles away and gas at $3 and increasing, it may never happen, unless I get a hybrid.

Michael, what is your favorite park?

Right now my two favorite parks are Zion, and the Grand Tetons. Of course there are a LOT of parks I have yet to visit, but those two are tops on my list.

The Tetons are arguably one of the most photogenic parks in the county. It's small, very easy to get around in, and not that many people there compared to other parks I have been to in mid summer. I think most people out on a family vacation, just "pass through" the Tetons on their way to Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and other places.

Another park that is on my must see list in Great Smokey Mt. NP, along with the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I could tell immediately from your vacation photos that you had a fair amount of time. Each photo location only has about 20minutes of light like you captured each morning and night. That means each location is visited once, or a maximum of twice a day. That means a lot of days.

I went to the park with one of my co-workers, he couldn't really understand what I wanted to get up at 4am for, because, "it's supposed to be a nice day all day long". Most people just don't understand at all what it takes to get a quality landscape photograph.

I get up early and drive for hours in the dark. Then I hike to a previously chosen location in the dark and start waiting for light that may or may not show up. I'll fire off 20-30 frames as the light changes. After the light show I'll get back in the car and drive to several other places snapping off a photo here and there for a later trip. Still good light but no longer spectacular. Then I consider the day pretty much shot from 10am until 6pm, so I usually go for a hike, drive around looking for tomorrow's location, and try to get a nap. Then I'll go to another pre-chosen location I'll fire off another 20-30 frames as the light wanes and walk to the car in the dark.

I was fortunate to have my co-worker along though, even if he wanted to stay out past midnight having a beer or 4(also one of my favorite things). Turns out he used to live and work in the area and was able to show me the northwest corner of the park which is where the first photo was taken. There are a lot of miles of dirt roads to get up there but there are several lakes that are hardly visited along with the cool little town of Polebridge that has some of the best baked goods I have ever had. If he hadn't been along I would have just driven the GTTSR and that would have been about it.

Next time I get up there I'll have a much better idea of where I want to be and when I want to be there.

I enjoyed the photos. Thanks for sharing. I particularly enjoyed the sky in #2 with the contrasting clouds. Great scenery shots.
