    to flashram

    HI
    I'm Mark,
I have a compaq 7110. It has 256 MB ram, If I upgrade ram, do I need to do it in pairs, or can I do it individually? I.E can I add a 1 G card to it and have 1.128 G or do i need 2 512 cards for 1 G? Also, for a new cpu, should I consider MAC for imaging. Its supposed to be so much better, But i'm used to what I have. Is it much different in use?
    Mark.

    Re: to flashram

Not the easiest of questions to answer as compaq usually requires that you use thier own ram which is usually expensive. Best way is to open the box and see how many slots are there for memory and what kind of memory is in there at present, then take it from there.

Generally you can put different memory amounts in slots and have different combinations, the trick is to ensure that the slowest RAM is in slot 0 of the memory slots and the faster RAM sitting behind it in slots 1, 2 and three if you have 4 slots.

The main thing with the named brand machines is, they use the lest upgradeable boards around to ensure people have to usually purchase new machines to get the upgraded equipment they need.

Not being a MAC person, I can only comment that in my experience, the general production houses all use MAC's for their productions, be it, print, photography, art work, brochuers etc, although governments usually have a combination of both MAC and Window machines, but usually heavily out weighed by Windows machines. Unix/Linux machines are starting to make a breakthrough into Governments here in Australia and I would image the same could be said in other parts of the industrialised world as well, like the US and England, even Japan as well.

MAC's are different to use but they are also more intuative than Windows Machines are.

If I had a choice now, probably I would look seriously at a MAC G5 dual processor with huge RAM and RAID hard drives, with Wide Screen CRT.

    Hope that helps.

It does help, it's got 2 slots, i' wadering because from what i can gather, 512 card is $100& 1G card is $250. I can afford 1 1G card, but if I need 2,I i gotta go w/ 512's, and thats it.

You might want to check your manual to see what the RAM limits on your system are, before spending money on RAM modules that you may not be able to use. Is your system a compaq presario 7110 desktop? IF it is, then I think the RAM limits on it are very limited. If you can't find the manual, go to crucial.com and use their system analyzer and they'l tell you what model you have, and what the maximum RAM you can have on the board is, and what modules are available as options for the upgrade.

    Opinions follow...

These days, Macs are no better nor more intuitive than PCs. The myth of Mac superiority goes all the way back to DOS days when PCs were command lines and Macs were GUI. Having worked 18 months in a large Mac shop (graphic arts for the Yellow Pages), the problems with the machines were just as much, and usually more, than the PCs. This large shop later moved to Windows without a problem.

Macs are not bad machines but they don't live up to the hype (does anything?) They cost more and all the important apps, and more, run under Windows too. Don't get caught up in the OS, either will work. These days, the Mac is a small minority, third after Linux (skip this one!), but that doesn't make it right or wrong for you.

    Re: to flashram about memory

The following web site might also help:

    www.crucial.com

This is one of the retail sides of Micron technology and their chip manufacturing. They have a step by step online process to find out what they sell that will fit your machine. Also they're probably still the largest OEM of memory products in the U.S. I've used their memory for about 5+ years and never had one fail. Multiple machines and manufacturers. They are not the cheapest. The do guarantee their products well.

    Re: to flashram about memory

Interesting at crucial.com, it says the maximum that the computer can have is 128 meg, but you already have 256meg, so much for that site giving out correct info.

It also says that there are 4 slots, but you are saying there are two slots.

If you have the manual as has been said, it should detail the maximum you can put in the machine, it might only be able to have 512 meg maximum, but could go as high as say 2 G (probably unlikely by the sound of the machine).

If you want to go to 1G, then the best most likely option, would be remove the 256 meg, buy two 512 meg cards and put them in, and move to 1G, would be cheaper for you by $50.

Might also want to check this out as well.

    http://h30094.www3.hp.com/memoryconf...s+Model+7110US

I couldn't find info regarding the slots on the HP site regarding this either, got conflicting info, one saying 4 slots and another implying 2 slots.

Based on what you have said, being only 2 slots on the motherboard or do you mean two slots left, I would say, if there are only two slots in total, then you should be able to install two 1G cards in there, or leave the 256 meg and install 1G card. If there are 4 slots, with two already used, then it is more likely that each of the cards is 128 meg cards, and you will need to get two 512 meg cards to put in the other two slots. Just make sure you get the correct RAM.

    Hope that helps.

As for the Mac's and Micheals comments. I know lots of people that have worked in lots of places, and one persons experiences don't neccessarily make things a global fact. The same can be said for Windows based machines. I built about 200 machines in a year, and only ever had problems with two of them, not bad statisics I think. But as I said before, haven't owned a Mac but know lots of people who do and swear blind by them, especially for their relative ease of use.

Even my 12 year old, says she finds the Mac easier to use and they only just got two late last year at the school she attended, so had little time to use it, but did comment on how easy it was to use over Windows versions, but did comment that she finds Windows XP easier to use than Win 2000 machine.

Go Mac! Macintosh's new OSX is very user friendly. It will take some time to get used to, as with any new piece of equipment, but you won't be dissatisfied. I bought an Emac six months ago with a fast little 1.25 Ghz G4 processor and 768mb of ram, and I can process huge files (like 200mb) no problem. I should have got a whole gigabyte of memory but felt I was spending enough already with the budget I was working with. Besides, Macs are far less susceptible to viruses than PCs. Just my 2cents.

HP link is probably more accurate

Crucial isn't always correct. They've been wrong on my new laptop, although their system scanner correctly identified my computer.

OOOPS! Sorry didn't mean to give you bad advice. Interestingly enough HP/Compaq (I should disclose I use to consult to these entities when they were separate) specify on THEIR memory configurator Micron/Crucial memory. I'll email some contacts and see if I can figure out what's wrong with the Crucial link.

Hey it is good advice, you can't be responsible for the inacurracies of websites, just like I can only give my opinions based on my experience with building and configuring machines over the past 13 years.

Any help advice and steering in the right direction is always a good thing.

Thank's to every one who responded and did reasearch for me.
I bought this from best buy, at the store 04/2001. It's 7110us, and its a huge tower w/plenty of room for upgrades. HP/Compaq refers me also to crucial. I'll call them for more info/help.
The reason i'm interested in 2G is because i have a 6x7 camera and scans will be around 500MB. If I can get a 1G card and use it w/128MB card I'll probbably go that way leaving room to expand if needed. Right now it takes about a minuete to handle a 45MB 35mm file.
I'm interested in a mac because I have heard that it handles photo files easily and dosen't need monitor calibrations to work well w/printing,etc..
Again thanks to all, I'll keep you posted,
    Mark

Mark, You still need to profile your monitor for photography and printing no matter what system you get, otherwise you will chase your tail around the room and get just as frustrated as the rest of us do.

Let us know how you get on with HP/Compaq tech support and your final out come will you.

I went to the crucial site and had prob's there. Looked up 7110 and said 128 mb max. tried their scanning software and it didn't load. looked at 7000 series and found specificaly for 7110us. Odd. I think I can get 1 1G mem card and runw/ 1 128 mb card for 243$. Should be all i need. 1.128 G. If I get 2 512 cards $86, ea. and need more I would have to replace a new 512 mb card. I dont think that 640mb would be enough for 6x7 scans.
Thanks again, and will let you know,
    Mark.

Mark, I thought the comment was quite funny actually.

Check out my post #7 there is a link there where I think you can get cheaper than $243 for the RAM.

And no problem, only to happy to help where I can.

    Good night.

    Mark,

I looked at another site regarding memory for your Compaq Presario 7110, and it tells me that it is a Laptop, is that correct. If so, the maximum you can go to is 512meg, so 256 in each of the 2 slots. The information gels with what you said, but I was thinking with my advice before that it was a desktop you were talking about. Can you clear up the misconception for me please.

THESE DAYS, Macs run OS X, and that alone, after one month of use, was enough for me to sell all of my PCs and get a Powerbook. The hype is well deserved, I can work on the Mac in ways that I simply CAN NOT on Windows. The workflow improvements are phenomenal, especially for a visual person such as myself. Plus, you get the joy of having roughly 60 viruses that target Macs compared to many thousands that target windows. Plus it runs many Unix apps, and the terminal gives me complete Unix control.

On the performance end, my 1.33 gigahertz powerbook with 256 megs of RAM performs better running multiple programs than my 3.2 gig P4 with 1024 megs of RAM, partially due to the very efficient caching systems OS X employs, but also due to the fact that the entire GUI is OpenGL accelerated, meaning that the CPU doesn't handle the screen draws but the graphics card does. Raw performance is slower on a PowerPC compared to what you get on a PC, but overall everyday usage, opening programs, waiting for windows to switch, all of it performs better on the mac. I was shocked, but it does.

Stability is mostly hype, I'll agree with that. OS X crashes, but it does so SLIGHTLY less frequently, and if it does I simply restart the Finder since it's independent of any running software.

So on paper, it may not add up to get a Mac, but spend some serious time using one, get to know how it operates, and I think you'll see that OS X is simply a superior platform. I actually enjoy WORKING on my computer now, and that alone is worth it for me.

Flashram_Peter_AUS, A TRUE freind down under.
I bought a 1 gig ram mem card right off of the link you posted, have been using it for about 3 wks now. cost $199 total.(they charged me TAX!).
My computer is now noticeably faster, although at times I don't notice much difference. Most notably while viewing large image files at print or pixel view, transitions are quick and liquid like, instead of freeze, wait, wait, jerk!
Also I have used the free tansform application in PS-E that previously would not work because of "not enough memory available".
    Thank you again
    Mark.
    P.s
I now have 1152 meg ram!
