The Glenwood Power Station, or as it is also known the Yonkers Power Station was constructed over the course of two years between 1904 and 1906. Citing the dangers of steam power on the cities railroad, the power station was built to electrify the rail system of New York Central. Central sold off the plant to subsidiary Con Ed in 1936, who in turn gave the railroad five years of free electricity, after which New York Central continued to purchase electricity for the rails, as it was cheaper in the long run to buy it than produce it themselves. The plant also served as a source of electricity for the surrounding neighborhood, residents noticed that whenever a train went by the lights would flicker. Glenwood was eventually put into standby in the 1950s and finally was shut down in in 1963. After all the equipment such as turbines and boilers were removed and the plant was sold to a private owner in the 70s. Since early 2008 the station has been on the Preservation New York's Seven to Save list.
