Conjunction Of Moon, Venus and Jupiter

I took the D200 out last night and put it on the tripod and took 30 photo's of the conjunction. I used my 80-200mm f2.8 and I varied the exposures. Here is one of the shots. In the full resolution version, you can see two of Jupiter's moons. I'll try to crop that one and post it in the next day or two. By the way, Venus is the bright "star" at the bottom, middle of the frame, and Jupiter is the "star" on the lower right of the frame. You can make out the oceans and plains on the dark side of the moon from the earthshine.

Nice shot! Yours came out much better than my first try at a shot like this so I looked at your settings and they are much different than mine. I may go back out a little earlier tonight and try settings simular to what you used and see what happens. After setting up my tri-pod and camera I did find my wireless remote handy while taking pictures from inside my warm car, Jeff

Alright! I shot it last night and the night before as well. First 2 are from my balcony last evening and last one is from a spot up the road 2 nights ago.

Walter I am going to try this again tonight and use setting closer to yours and Speed's settings. I'm out looking for a setting with the trees similar to the one you took so I can try again tonight. Both of you used similar settings that were way different from mine so I will adjust tonight and see what I can come up with, Jeff

    Awesome shots Rick!

Of course, I expected nothing less of you!

What did you shoot these with?

Sorry I didn't mention all my settings.

I shot in manual mode, ISO 100, f4, and three to four second exposures seemed to work best for this setup.

Thanks Speedo! I shot these with the D70s. The wide angles were with the kit lens and the close-up was with the 105 2.5 Nikkor AIS

Re: Conjunction Of Moon, Venus and Jupiter

I figured I'd find some shots of this event. Nice shot. Glad you posted the settings too in a later post. Hope you're doing well!!

I had some beautiful, clear views. I hurried home, grabbed my camera, tripod and remote, went outside and started cussing because of the clouds that rolled in while I was inside!

    Oh well.

    Jupiter And It's Moons

This is a crop of the original image I posted. You can see Jupiter and two of it's moons. They are all lines because of the 4 second exposure. Remember the earth is rotating at nearly 1000 miles per hour!

    Moon Shot

This was the last shot I took on the 1st. It is one of the better shots I've gotten of the moon with digital. I cropped out a lot of the emtpy space (no pun intended), and resized it for PR.

    You figured right my friend!

Sorry about the weather there. It was cloudy Nov 30th and Dec 2nd. I was blessed to have clear weather on the 1st.

I have missed the last two lunar eclipses because of the weather, not to mention some of the better meteor showers, and Mercury transiting the sun - twice! So I feel your pain.

Say hi to Collette and Gus for me.

I will pass your greeting on. It's the G-man's birthday today so the camera's getting some use today. I may have some photos to post later.

Say hi to Dawn for me. I just saw your D300 post. She's way too good to you! I know you'll put it to good use!
