How does one exract EXIF data from a photo?

I noticed in another forum that members referenced EXIF data from a posted photo. The information that I could understand seems quite worthwhile. It would help me if I were to be able get this data for some of my photos that I did not record the data for ... or that I shot in auto mode.

I am really a neophyte so please explain in very small words/terms.

It stands for exchangeable image file format. Basically, it's the metadata stored in an image file that contains all of your shooting information (camera, time, exposure, lens, etc.). There are several programs out there for reading EXIF data. One good free one I use is from http://www.opanda.com/ .

I downloaded OPANDA EXIF 2.3 and OPANDA PowerEXIF 1.2 (The PowerEXIF is a trial version for a fee I guess).

What program are you using to process your digital photos? I would think that the program you are using should allow you to view your EXIF data. I view mine in either Photoshop Camera RAW for my raw files, or in the Bridge. You can also go to File > Info to find it.

Or are you trying to see the EXIF date for other peoples images?

From Windows XP (latest service pack) do right-button-click on the JPG and choose Properties then Résumé (sorry mine is in French) then Advanced and you have a list of the EXIF data

With the US English Version. Click on the Summery Tab, and select the Advance button, and you can see the EXIF data as a list.

Most editing programs can show the EXIF data from a photo.

Even Microsoft Windows can do it.
Right-click on the file in explorer.
Click on Properties.
Click on the Summary tab.
If there is a button saying "Advanced >>" then there is EXIF information in the file.
Click on that and you see the information.

Download the Microsoft RAW Image Viewer.

This can display most RAW images, but not Canon G9 .CR2 files

But the coolest thing is to do it without downloading the photo.
I use a plug-in for FireFox called EXIF Viewer, simple to install.
Just right-click on the web page, and choose "View Image EXIF Information"

I want it all. Both rerview mine but also satisfy my curiosity about the photos of others.

This works well for my photos that I have on my PC [downloaded/uploaded], but it does not help my curiosity about photos of others.

Spot on. I am an extremely curious person. When I see a photo that I really like, I want to know as much as possible about it (F-stop, shutter speed, ASA/ISO, etc) ... without downloading.

As mentioned above, I have downloaded OPANDA EXIF 2.3 and OPANDA PowerEXIF 1.2 and I guess I need the plug-in for FireFox as well. (Don't use FireFox a lot, but I do use it.)
