    early planning for vacation

We are finally going to take a real vacation which means we will actually go somewhere to get away from everything. We are planning on going to Va. around the Fredericksburg/Williamsburg are. We will have a about 4 1/2 days to do things and I am looking at stuff now, but figured I would see if anyone here has any suggestions.

    Re: early planning for vacation

    Hey srobb.

I'm from Virginia and have spent some time in that area of the state. Here are a few recommendations:

    Virginia Beach
The beach and boardwalk are nice. Look into driving the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel for some fun. There are also a couple of lighthouses on the military bases you can shoot.

    Williamsburg
Of course, Williamsburg is awesome because it's a historic city in which everyone is dressed in colonial garb. Look also at going to Busch Gardens, the amusement park there.

    Richmond
Richmond has several attractions, including a science center with Imax, Maymont park with a free, small zoo, historic and photogenic state capital, and the James River which is both scenic and navigable in the summer if you rent kayaks or white water raft. They used to do full moon raft trips in the summer.

If you can get away, or maybe on your drive from KY, consider doing either Shenandoah Park and Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mountains of Virginia are one of my favorite places in the world.

Good luck planning your trip. Let me know if you'd like any more info!

Oh yeah, look into taking a day trip to either Pocahontas State Park or Lake Anna for a lake walk in nature if you feel like getting away. Lake Anna is a very large, popular lake with recreational waterboating in the summer.

I 95 south to Selma. Highway 70 East to Newport.

Meet Speed and his lovely wife, spend the day touring the county. If the weather's nice, go on a boat ride to Cape Lookout.

    Just a suggestion.

Actaully, it's about a five hour trip from where you'll be, to where I am. If you had longer (8 or 10 days) it would be worth spending a couple of days down here. Maybe next trip. Enjoy your vacation.

Rick, thanks much for those suggestions. I will look into those, also. That's one thing I like about doing this early; I will be able to have an itenerary planned out so all we have to do is leave and know where we are going. Can't to try and catch a sunrise/sunset along the coast.

I did think about you all. Robert, but I knew we would not have enough time. However, I will a have a couple days left that I can tack onto maybe a long holiday weekend. I still want to get over to Asheville at some time, so we may try to get over your way then.

Well, I am working on this more. Hey, Rick, is the Bridge/Tunnel what you take to the Eastern Shore area? I am thinking it is. If so, we will be taking that because I want to go up and get some pics of the lighthouse on Assateague Island. Also want to get the ones at Cape Henry and plan on stopping by Jamestown. Have to figure out if that can all be done in a day.

    That's quite the busy itenerary!

Yes, the Bay Bridge/Tunnel takes you to the eastern shore, which in my opinion is MUCH prettier than what you'll find inland. I think it's a couple hour drive up the coast to Assateague from the Virginia Beach area. You may consider just staying in Assateague for the night.

The eastern shore is beautiful! If you go to Assateague, make sure you look out for all the wild ponies!

... and the man eating mosquitoes.
Have someone show you how to catch and cook some blue crab while you are at the coast.

Hmmmmm, may have to take some body armour. Fixing the blue crab sounds pretty good, though. Thanks for the tips, Chunk.

Yeah, it could. Guess i want to see as much as I can in the time we will have there. I had forgot about that being where the wild ponies were. I will definitely try to make it up there now.

We are actually going to base ourselves out of Fredericksburg because it won't cost us anything for motel there. The company John works for owns one there so he can get a room for nothing. I want to see Jamestown Settlement and the Cape Henry Lighthouses and may spend more time on Eastern Shore now.

Looks like vacation could be off for now.....

We just found out that the company which owns the motel where John works is on the selling block. Don't know how quickly, or slowly, all of that will happen. After a lengthy talk on it, we decided that it may be a good idea to wait on that and see what happens.

Thanks, Rick, I'll keep that in mind. I do want to go at a later date, just not sure when.
