    E-mail virus/hoax

I've received a few e-mails like this and figured I'd better make sure you guys knew they aren't coming from us. You might be getting something similar from other sites you've registered with. Rest assured that we haven't given out anyone's personal information and your registration data is protected. The important thing is that you know that these e-mails aren't coming from PhotographyREVIEW.com or PCPhotoREVIEW.com. Please don't click on any links or open any attachments. The best thing to do when you get these e-mails is delete them.

    Thanks-

    Haven't seen those, but...

...I got a similar one from a fake EBAY address recently. It said my account was suspended for improper conduct on the site (have no idea what that means). To reinstate it, I had to click on a link.

    Yeah, right!

They also try to scam you by having you confirm your account by sending them your password, something Ebay (and all these types of sites for that matter would NEVER ask for in an email).

What's weird is that the text of that message sounds like it was written by someone whose first language ISN'T English...

Yeah, you really have to pay attention when you go though your mail, or else!

    Thanks for the heads up...

    Hi PJ,

Thanks for the warning. Because I "trust" PR, I would have believe it - and run with it.

    They're everywhere.

I get a similar message from (supposedly) within our company and my Norton always picks them up as the attachment that they're trying to goad you into opening has either the Beagle or Netsky viruses. Delete 'em.!!

Interesting PJ, have you done a trace on the email headers to try and see where it originated from. Your admin people should be able to backtrack it and maybe find the IP address, which then might give you the ISP the person is using. You can then report them to the ISP for ABUSE and the ISP might actually disconnect them totally.

Did you know the Nigerian General scam apparently originated from someone here in Australia. I was totally shocked when I heard that a couple of weeks ago on the news here. They have caught him, he has been charged and will face court on numerous accounts of internet fraud. So if he can be caught I am sure the Spammer of that email should be able to be caught.

    I actually got a few...

...HAND WRITTEN letters from these people years before they started using the internet.

    I've kept them as souvenirs...

    Asylum Steve,

I wouldn't go that far to say that the email was written by someone who's first language wasn't English. After reading many replies in these forums and other forums (associate the names) it doesn't surprise me with the wording of the email.

People these days are getting very slack with their English and how they present their information, often using "Street Speak", "Mobile Text Shorthand", "Internet Shorthand" as well and the level of "Proper English" is droping.

One thing I wish these forums like most other forums had, was the ability for people to at the minimum, check for spelling mistakes. One forum I visit has that and it makes it so easy to correct mistakes, gives you spelling alternatives to match the misspelled words and you just click on them and it corrects the word in the test message of the posting.

Still this is a great forum for everyone to communicate and at the least their is the Edit option of everyones posts anyway. Sometimes I want to go in and just correct that little spelling mistake as it really irks me a little, but I leave it.

Peter, I agree - and it usually is a good way to spot a scam. I'm an ebay seller (aren't we all) and got one recently that made me think for a minute - until I saw some really basic spelling errors. It was well done other than that - and did, of course, turn out to be a scam. I got a dozen others today, but none (supposedly) from here. Moose Peterson has an email news update that he sends out occasionally - his list got hacked recently too.

What fun is that? Using only written communication already strains out much important content from our community. Some slang and such let's us get a small bit of it back. Your post about mountain biking would not be anywhere near as enjoyable if they didn't contain some of the jargon.

Teh Merriam Webster toolbar is teh r0x0r. Puts it up there like the Google toolbar. If you aren't using both of those, you are missing out. (google even has a toolbar now that goes on your TASKBAR so you can do searches without opening up a browser.)
