Built in 1837 for Essex County the jail on Newark Street was built to replace an older structure that had burned down 1835, and once stood at Broad and Church Street (Now occupied by Grace Episcopal Church). John Haviland was called in to design both the jail and new courthouse, which unlike the previous building, were now seperated by a block. The complex expanded through the 1890s and into the early 20th century. The final real change occurred in 1907 when an additional 112 cells were added and toilets and running water were added to both the new and existing cells. By the time the jail closed and the prisoners transferred to the new Essex County Pen there were 300 cells. The old Jail served as headquarters for the county's narcotics division until the late 1970s. Today the Jail stands as the oldest municipal building still standing. There are two parties when it comes to the jail there are those who want to save and restore it, and those who want to knock it down.
