    Lenses for Alaska?

    Folks

My wife and I are heading to Alaska for 2 weeks at the end of the summer. We will be spending one week on a small cruise boat that allows a significant amount of kayaking and hiking, and the other week in Denali. I will be bringing my new Canon S50 for point-and-shoot digital, and also my Canon Elan IIe. Currently, I have the 28-105 USM 3.5/4.5 lens, and a 20-35 USM wide angle. I was considering buying a tele zoom lens to add to my collection, but don't know what is the most useful for my trip. I was considering the 70-200 2.8L IS, or the 100-400 4.5/5.6L IS.

Does anyone have other good options? What about something combined with a teleconverter? I am confused about the use of IS and AF with a teleconverter and the Elan IIe, which I bought in 1997.

When not on vacation, most of my photography is sports related (cycling, sailing, etc).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jay

We were there two summers ago. Would love to go again, but we have other places to see first.

I used the Canon 100-400mm L series IS zoom. Be sure to take a shuttle back into Denali. The park shuttles are just fine and cheaper than the tours. Make advanced reservation at the park headquarters. Also, there is a trail just into Denali that goes to Horseshoe Lake. There we saw a moose and Canadian Lynx. These images are from scanned prints.

Oh, watch out for the strange people with antlers though.....Ok, its me

Here is a link on my website with some additional Alaskan images. Would be happy to give you other travel pointers.
