    A Couple Y-stone Holga Shots

    ...before mtbbrian explodes.
Two Holga shots and a pinhole. I've got loads more film to develop.

very nice, i like the middle one. the subject fits very nice with the holga approach. reminds me of what it would look like after a big war or something.

Out of curiosity, what makes the Holgas look so different then other cameras?

It's just that I REALLY look forward to seeing great new stuff from my friends!
Can't a guy get a little excited about that? :ihih:
These are very different than what you'd expect to see from such an incredible landscape.
They really give the area a barren look.
I don't think I have seen a lot of your pinhole work, and I don't think I have ever seen a color pinhole photograph ever!
I am glad to see you are shooting so much color!
    You're Welcome!
I look forward to seeing more!

    Well....
They are mostly plastic for starters, even the lens elements. (How many elements are there in a Holga lens anyway?)
    They vingette too.
What else would you like to know?

    No Worries..
What were you drinking anyway? Do you have any to share?
A lot of it, that makes Holga photographs different is that the cameras are so low tech.
As I mentioned they are mostly plastic, they have just one shutter speed which is somewhere near 1/100 of a second and have two f stops of about f/8 and f/11.
Each one is rahter unique in the lightleaks and whatever abberations it produces.
A lot of photographers I know who shoot Holgas have more than just one, I have four myself, and Megan has about that many too.
They shoot 120 film, not that is anything out of the ordinary.
The biggest thing that is special about them is that no two photographers will produce the same results with them.
Make sure you check out mine and Megan's websites and galleries.
Max P D has some good stuff too!
You can also checkout www.toycamera.com, www.holgamods.com or www.lomography.com for more great examples of Holga and 'toy camera' photography.

How do you get such great results with yours focus wise? I know they aren't supposed to be tack sharp, but mine is always such a mess. I'll be dropping off a roll next week, and we'll see....

So far I've only tried b&w, but I'm going to pick up some color.

I don't know, Adina! I got the plastic-lensed ones, not the glass. I *do* use Porta 400 VC - maybe it's the film?!

Excellent question Adina! Not sure how you're digitizing your photos, but could it be a scanning problem? Like Brian mentioned, it has about a 1/100th shutter speed, so you kinda need to be still ( I tend to be jerky myself (pun intended) ). And don't forget about the focusing icons - it's pretty much a guesstimate...

I've wondered how the Toy Camera crowd on this forum convert their Holga images to digital files. For myself, I use an Agfa flatbed scanner at work for my color work and it seems to do a reasonable job. Megan, Brian, what do you use?

This Agfa contraption I use has a glass sheet you pull out to set the neg on - then push back into the machine - like a thin drawer. I also tape down the edges so it stays flat as possible. When the neg scans, it sounds like something flattens the neg ( hopefully ). I've tried using a cheaper scanner at work for color negatives with no luck at all. :mad2:

B&W negs are easy enough on most any flatbed scanner I would think. And B&W and color contact sheets should be easy.

    Good luck.

I have an Epson 4180 scanner.
It's a flat bed scanner. I can scan right from the negative or slide.

Re: A Couple Y-stone Holga Shots

    Hi Megan,

These are great! I especially like the second one. The composition works well with the Holga. You've inspired me to take my Holga on my next backpacking trip. They're so light, why not.

Thanks for sharing! I hope you have more.

    Paul

PS. I've noticed a lot of people have questions about Holgas, including myself. For the sake of keeping things organized and easy to search for, I'm going to start a new thread just for Holga questions. I hope the experts will help explain this strange phenomenon to us newbs.

Re: A Couple Y-stone Holga Shots

I use a flatbed scanner and scan the contact sheets. I used to be able to scan film, but the function broke, which is fine, really... it's a consumer-grade desktop scanner, so if I need something scanned for something important, I'll pay for a lab scan or get an 8x10 enlarged to scan. I prefer to keep my Holga - and the majority of my artwork - wet darkroom, because I really truly LOVE wet darkroom. Out of freelance necessity, I've gone modern, but not without a lot of spitting, cursing, glaring, and shaking my fist in digital's general direction.

Re: A Couple Y-stone Holga Shots

As P-J, Rickwalt, and my various and sundry cousins and friends can attest, I've taken Holgae (Holgii? It's been awhile since I took Latin) traipsing through Colorado mountains, Arizona deserts, Thai jungles, urban Hong Kong, British Isles, austere Japan....... and many other places in between. I'm glad for the new modification with the foam - now I generally don't have to use a changing back to swtich out film. It makes it easier to take out the film, as well as not getting as many suspicious glances from people thinking I'm building bombs. ::rolls eyes::
