    Cherry Blossoms Washington D.C.

Went to the Cherry Blossom festival in D.C. on Saturday.
    Beautiful sights and great weather!
    I will post more later.

    Frank,

Will look forward to seeing more of the festival!

What's up with the Washington Monument (the two colors/shadings) I was under the impression that all the restoration work was done?

Thanks for posting this (and I hope more).

This is a great shot Frank. I like the formal feel with the centered monument and framing flowers.

The building of the monument took place in two different periods (interrupted by some war or something) and the stone used for the lower part was from a different part of the quarry or a different quarry. The original was no longer available. The restoration was never intended to obsure that part of its history.

There was a show on the History Channel recently on the construction of this. Not having been to DC, I didn't really know anything about it personally and it was a very interesting show. I think it was the Civil War that interrupted the building of it, and someone new took over afterwards. That person decided that the foundation wasn't strong enough to support the completed building so they first dug around it and rebuilt it. The top was finished with an aluminum cap, which was pretty high-tech for the time.

Nice shot, I'd like to get there some day myself. Post some more when you get a chance. Did you use a tripod at all - if so, how hard is it to get a permit (which I understand is something you need for using a tripod on the mall)?
