Calling on all you muthas out there...

So I'm driving around today, stopped at a red light, and I see a priest, a rabbi, and a shaman in the next car all talking on their cell phones.

Ok, actually, that's got nothing to do with my question. Just thought it was unusual... ;)

Anyway, up ahead a bit I see a van, and on the side and back are some graphics for a ultrasound image photo service. IOW, they create photo prints of the little critter, er fella (or gal as the case may be) for the expectant parents to keep (suitable for framing I suppose).

Underneath the company name it said, "3D and 4D pictures made from your ultrasound". Now I can wrap my brain around the idea of a 3D picture, but what the heck is a 4D image?!?

Pictures of unborn babies in the Fourth Dimension kinda reminds me of an X-files episode...

I don't want your brain to hurt. So here... http://www.geddeskeepsake.com/faq_patients_d.shtml#2

The scientists needed a way to distinguish this new breakthrough technology from the older 3D imaging technology. Not only did they eliminate the element of time in capturing 3D images, the image quality was far superior to that of traditional 3D imaging. So, the scientists coined the term 4D, with the fourth dimension being "time". Given the impact of these miracle images and the quality and capabilities of this newer technology, the term 4D has been picked up and used by the media in presenting this incredible technology

Ok, in this case a grandmutha is fine... :)

Ah Lara, I was thinking of you, and was hoping you'd come to my rescue. I remember you emailing me about your daughter thinking about having some ultrasound photos done with some photoshop razzle dazzle thrown in, and figured you know all about this.

What you say makes sense, and clears up the mystery for me. Thanks...

Now, I'm waiting for a more esoteric explanation from Michael Fanelli, our resident "nuke-ular" (yes I know the right way to say it, it just drives me crazy when Bush mispronounces it) physicist...

Re: Ah, I'm not gonna go there...

I find the 4D kinda freaky. I bet it's very expensive. My daughter ended up not getting the photoshop imaging, but did get a video tape done. That was very cool. We were all able to get to see it.

Ah, one of my biggest pet peeves. It drives me nuts when people say nucular, argh!! You would think someone would clue in the president!

BTW, I think Liz is still in Bosnia, but she can get back at you when she comes home. ;)

Re: Ah, I'm not gonna go there...

We had a Politician here resign yesterday as the leader of his party and Deputry Prime Minister, because he is having "Prostrate Problems" the word is "Prostate" you know the one men get problems with, and not the one where they have problems like "Lying Prostrate (straight)". Oh that comment might be actually correct for a Politician mighten it.

Steve you probably will find that they were having a "Conference Call" with each other discussing Religious events.

4D imaging as Lara said is the same as 3D, but with much better texturing and cleaner movement as well, a bit like frame rates with video and jaggedness if not the correct frame rate, know what I mean.

4D Time Travel, they can speed up time and show you what your baby will look like when it's born. They use a special TARDIS camera.

In astronomy, the concept of 4D has been around for years. And yes, the fourth dimension is time. Hence the whole time-space continuim concept.

A 4D image on the other hand, had me stymied. Now, thanks to Lara, I understand that they basically make a 3D video, which by it's very nature includes time. Duh.

    Re: Lara To The Rescue!

I've seen the 4d images, and they are creepy. Instead of a regular old ultrasound, where you get a photo where the baby has kind of an alien look to it, you get a photo where the baby has a more human look, but not quite human, and certainly not what you'd expect from an ultrasound photo.

When we had our youngest, we drove an hour to go to the same dr who had delivered our first. Our family dr was about 5 min from where we lived. The hospital that she worked with was about 10 min away. Had we gone there, we could have gotten the 4d ultrasound, which wasn't widely available, because the technology was new and very expensive. However, since my hubby works for the company who developed it, we'd have gotten to test it out.

I prefer my little alien photos
    I sleep, but I don't rest.
