Exclamation Burgers, Baseball & Bolsheviks: recent editorial/freelance work

Here are a few photos from some recent assignments:

    JerryBuilt Burgers Media Preview

This was a media preview of a new local restaurant. My assignment was to shoot the restaurant inside and out. Photos were for a slideshow and a couple of articles. Select photos on my flickr.

There are a couple of things that are wrong with image above. First, the burger is upside down. Yep. I should've flipped it. Here's what happen. The burger was also my dinner. So we (my writer and I) got our burgers and opened them right up, this was the way the burger sat after it was unwrapped. I took a few shots and then promptly sat down and ate. Having missed lunch, I was more ready to eat than to shoot the burger. The shot should've been with the sandwich flipped but I was thinking about my stomach and not my shot. It really bugs me when I see the pics and I've made a mental note of this mistake and am not going to do it again. The other thing is my DOF is just a tad too shallow. I should've opened it up a bit more. Again, my mistake. But damn my hunger!! LOL!

    Astros Fan Fest

Once a year the Astros hold a fan fest. It's an all day event that includes getting to meet and obtain autographs from current and former players, vendors with baseball related merchandise, food, games and activities for kids, tours, items for sale and more. I shot this event as a "working fan" - I was on assignment for one of Houston's alt weeklies but I'm also a huge fan of the home team. It's nice to get the chance to shoot the things you love. I shot for a couple of hours on a Saturday for a slideshow.

The Houston Symphony - All Shostakovich Program

I absolutely love The Houston Symphony and to be able to shoot for them is an even bigger honor. The Symphony has several photographers that they use for studio type work and for events. I occasionally shoot live events for them, this particular event was two rehearsals. A private rehearsal and a rehearsal for the symphony sponsors. The Symphony was rehearsing for an upcoming event in NYC and this performance was all Shostakovich and featured a Russian vocalist. I had limited access and couldn't shoot as close as I would've liked. But my 70-200mm saved me and while I could've benefited from using my 300mm I failed to bring it along. Another lesson learned.

Nice work, Mr. House! I think all the photos are great and I like that you give us some insight into the assignment, the process and your mistakes. I often tell people that our photographic mistakes are more important than our successes because we learn (or at least we should) from our mistakes. The burger photo and description was especially good. I could totally see myself down the exact same thing

Three very diverse assignments all done very professionally. Very nice work. Love the interior shot and the violinist.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??
