Wink Nat's Business Card Post Reminds Me....

That business cards and a website will make sales for you!

Tuesday evening as we were finishing up our karate class, I heard my cell phone ringing. When I picked it up, I was surprised that is was an Environmental Health Specialist I knew from another county. Seems I had given him a business card a year or so ago when we were talking about photography. Now he's getting married and looking for a photographer, and he remembered that I had given him a business card.

While we were on the phone, he and his fiance' got on the computer and looked at my website. (She was on the desktop, he was on his wireless laptop.) He complimented me on some of my astrophotography shots, one of my sports shots intrigued him, and he was tickled with the tractor shot (from my "Scenes From A Redneck Wedding"). After a few moments he told me his fiance' smiled and gave him a thumbs up. I'm now booked for July 17th.

I have simple business cards that I designed and printed myself (though I intend to order some professional quality ones soon) and my website is a simple one - sort of a website for dummies type thing (I've got to sweet talk Nat into building me a rocking site like hers). But having buisness cards and a website got me a job.

Just thought I'd share this with my extended family here on PR.

The Power of the Business Card!

    You Go Roberto!
I use business cards too, I hand them out here and there, but have story like that.
I make my own, I'll have to scan them and post them.
But they are a good way to share your work and or website!
    Business Cards are worth doing!

You know it buddy! Any photographer who wants to get paid for his/her photography should get some business cards made up. Go to Staples and buy a box and print your own (like I did), but get some.

I have a full time job. I have no intention of going pro. But if I can make a few bucks here and there to support my photography habit, then so be it.

Here's a flatbed scan of my card.

I'll scan mine later and post it.
Sounds like we do it much the same way.
I have two versions though and use the back.
That's a good card, what is the name of the light house anyway?

That is the Cape Lookout Lighthouse on South Core Banks, North Carolina.

And I have a second version as well, but I haven't scanned that one. ;-)

When I get some professionally made, I intend to use both sides.

Thanks for the input my friend! Looking forward to seeing your card.

    Speed,
    Congrats on the work Speedo
Its not easy building your own site. I've been experimenting with one for a while now, and then I look at my husbands site (in all its rockin glory) and it gets me bummed out! haha.
Can't wait to see some shots from this wedding- you will post some right?!

You're not giving yourself enough credit. It seems to me that the couple hired you because they know you, found that you are a good guy with a sense of humor and similar interests. Isn't that the way life always works?

Of course. You are wise beyond your years.

The groom does the same type of work I do. We see each other every three months at quarterly professional meetings. We are two of a kind - which is to say, jokers. ;-)

Thanks for the words of encouragement my friend!

    Thanks for the comments.

I made up the business cards primarily as a means of establishing contacts with other photographers, and those interested in my photography. They have come in handy, in more ways than I would have imagined.

I set up the website mainly to establish a professional look (in case anyone ever wanted to hire me for a job). I kept it simple because I don't know HTML, and I didn't want to overload anyone who uses dial-up. So I set up some catagories with a few shots showcasing my work. Apparently, it has now paid off for me. Now I'm motivate to build a "real" website. :-)

And this is a good way for any photographer to show off his or her work.

You are right - it's not easy building a site. Deciding how you want it laid out, what to put in, what to leave out. I did a simple, cookie cutter type site. I know Natalie worked for months on her site. But hers looks awesome.

Look at some of the other sites folks here have built. Mtbbrian, Colorado Amigo (also a Brian), Troy Bates, Asylum Steve,...the list goes on. All have built wonderful sites that meet their vision, and showcase their talents. Best of all, they will help you in any way they can. Is your site on-line? If so, let us have the adddress so we can see it. You know you'll get plenty of feedback here. :-)

So what is your husbands website of?

Of course, I will post some of the shots. No tractors in this one though. Sorry. ;-)
