    Astrophotography-The Moon

Playing around on the deck with the Sigma SD10 and a inexpensive (ebay special!) 400mm lens. Cropped, some sharpening and contrast adjustment. That's about it!

Wow, that's awesome! What sort of lens, settings and camera did you use?

    Nice shot!

I'm also curious about your settings.

Also, what magnification factor does the sensor on the SD10 give?

And tell us more about this 400mm lens.

    Inquiring minds want to know...

    Re: Astrophotography-The Moon

Thanks all for your kind compliments!

The camera used was a Sigma SD10 with a Sigma 400mm-5.6 APO lens.

The lens was mounted to the tripod (one of the basalt tripods) with a custom Carbon Fiber mounting plate.

    The settings:

    Image Dimensions: 10.3 MP (2268 x 1512 x 3)
    Capture Date: 10/8/2005 6:53:43 PM
Exposure Mode: P - Program AE
    Exposure Compensation: 0
    ISO Setting: 200
    White Balance Setting: Monochrome (ex-Auto)
    Shutter Speed: 0.3s
    Aperture Value: F16
    Metering Mode: Center Area Metering
Focus Setting: AF-S - Single Auto Mode - Manual Overide
    Focal Length: 400 mm
    Resolution: High
    Drive Mode: Mirror Lock-up

The picture angle is equivalent to 1.7x 35mm frame.

The AF was switched off and the photo was manually focused. I did use a wireless remote to trigger the shutter to avoid as much vibration as possible. This was kind of a quick deal, I got home, it was getting dark, the sky was clear and the moon was there!

The 400mm lens I bought on a whim just to see what it could do. Haven't had much opportunity to use it. The lens was 'new' old stock or old 'new' stock. Never used, original box, case etc.

Perhaps I can shoot the full moon in the next few nights!
