    We call it the "defog" but we have been using 20,60,0 (unsharpmask). We add this to every image, it's the first step we do. We were introduced to this technique by fellow photographers in Michigan about 4 yrs ago. Loretta Young and Mike Stone, 2 excellent photographers.

    Good post , Mark. I too, have come across , through experimentation, that a higher radius and lower strength can give some nice effects. In addition to that, I find that if i want to sharpen a somewhat grainy photo, that by using a high radius and lower strength, i can actually step above the size of the grain and wind up sharpening only the edges of the subjects thus giving me a percieved sharper image for print without increasing the noise very much. If I were to use the usual low radius of 1.0 - 1.5 i would end up significantly increasing the noise in the image. Of course, getting the right combination requires a few tries and hits of the undo button.
