    4 Gigapixel camera anyone?

"Weighing more than 100 pounds, Flint's camera captures images at 4 gigapixels -- a resolution high enough to photograph four football fields and capture every single blade of grass. When printed at maximum resolution, the images are as big as billboard."

He used to build Hubble cameras and other military things. This camera was built from spare parts using surplus 9-inch-by-18-inch spy film (yes, film, not digital).

    Wow!

Awesome images........I can't believe he built this camera from spare parts....gee! Very talented person.

Thanks for sharing this here. There are probably lots of things this camera could be used for.....

    Holy pixels, Batman!

Very interesting project. Amazing what you can do with a few spare parts.

So how long does it take to focus this thing??!!!! You need a computer program to tell you how to focus the lens? Good grief man! It must take him an hour to adjust the lens, and by then, something has probably moved and he has to start all over again. Too bad.

If what he is using is old, already released to the public, military technology just imagine what the new unmanned spy planes must have in them. They fly around way up in the sky yet can come back with pictures that probably can show what color people's hair is.

Must remember to wear my tinfoil hat tomorrow.

I'm with Rick. What a rip!

That would have been a proper image to check image quality with.

    Penny

If you read the article, you would know that the COST of the film (9"X18") is actually less per square inch than 35mm. The resolution, on the other hand, is phenomenal. Thus proving, that sometimes, bigger is better.

Also, all you digital fans take note, this is a FILM camera! :-)

The final images scan in at 4 gigapixels.

Can you imagine how much memory he must have on his computer? :-O

Maybe he built a CRAY supercomputer from spare parts as well. ;-)

PS - Penny, you know I love you and I'm just picking with you. ;-)

Personnally, I want to see true color images of the Milky Way. I hope he gets his observatory open soon. If he helped design the Hubble, I wonder what kind of telescope he uses. :-O
