For the first one, it would be better if you had moved to your left a bit and not with the head of the wrestler clipped. It doesn't seem to me you needed to include the legs of that the...refs?...in the picture.

For the second one, it it were me, I would not leave so much empty mat space in the foreground. I also would try to include more of the wrestlers in the frame.

Just $0.02 from an inexperienced sport shooter.

I'm gonna attempt my own first time with high school wrestling this coming Tuesday night.. the school's second season in the high school league, hope I get some decent shots myself. Unlike hockey and basketball, it will be something completely new to me where I don't know what to anticipate in the action but I expect a fun evening.

    Re: Wrestling Pictures

Since wrestling is in a relatively poorly lit area, with many light absorbent surfaces you need a faster lens. You can get away with a prime, maybe even a 50mm, which should be pretty cheap.

There are many dark figures for the camera to decide on, and when you're chugging at 1600 ISO, the noise is going to be (this is not to say the pictures are bad, simply my unrestricted opinion) downright disgusting.

The lower picture came out very nicely, the composition isn't great, but I do like the way it looks. Not sure how the competitors are going to feel about flash. In my opinion, it would be very distracting, and the last thing you want to do as a "passive" photographer is affect the photo in such a manner.

Well, I don't know what camera you're using, but some of the latest ones should amaze you even @ ISO3200.

Based on my limited experiences with some local gyms, one may not have any choice but shoot @ISO1600 or higher - even with f1.8 - in order to use a faster shutter speed such as 1/400 or 1/500. If you use flash, even if it is allowed, you may find yourself unable to keep up with actions.

I'll definitely share the experience of Tuesday night sometime soon after... being I'll be cooking (yes, I'm a guy that cooks ;)) part of Christmas Eve so hopefully by Friday anyway I'll have pics online if I don't stay up Tuesday and get them online.

Hahah. Only have one system camera.. 1984 Olympus OM :blush2:

Only using fully manual cameras sure has taught me lots. Maybe I'll upgrade to an F100 when they are 20 years old

Back on topic...obviously this camera does not do well at a higher ISO. The basketball pictures lower down on this portion of the forum obviously shows me how well some cameras perform at higher "film" speeds.

f2.8 has an approximate pupil size of 71.42mm with that focal length (200mm), while with 1.8 it would have an approximate pupil size of 111.11mm. That's about 64 percent more light, which would definitely be sufficient to drop the ISO and hopefully cut out on some of that noise.

Most of that is irrelevant though, because with the built in flash, the picture came out quite nicely. Regardless, I think a 200mm lens is a bit much for shooting in a gym, when you can use a faster lens.

I have to say, if only there was a way to change my film speed on the fly, view the picture I just took, not have to mess with chemicals, and fit 100's of pictures on a small device, life would be so much easier.

    Re: Wrestling Pictures

    Is it f1.8 or 2?

Definitely the wider aperature made the noise go away with the same ISO and different shutter speed.

It was a different camera a D300 not the D70. The lens was an 85mm F/1.8. The aperture of the shot was F/2.0.
