    Women's Volleyball (56K Warning??)

I shot some college Volleyball last night. I used my Rebel XT and the 70-200/f2.8 lens. These photos were shot on fully manual (1/640th @ f/2.8) with a custom WB at ISO 1600.

    1. I realize this first image isn't perfect by any means. The focus is slightly off, and it is very grainy. But I think this tells a good story. At this point, the team was down one match, and although they held the lead, they were quickly losing the momentum.

    4. Pictures four and five kinda go together. #12's spike is blocked, and she looks helplessly as it falls for a side out.

Those are great! They are so sharp.

Never in my life would I have thought you shot with your iso on 1600. When I do it is so obvious.
    It's not blurry. It's bokeh.

Some really nice images here. Love the tite crops and way you anticipated the action. I don't know nearly enough about volley ball to get this type photos. Nice job.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

I like the shots, and they have some great facial expression, but I'm wondering if you were on auto white balance because some shots looks great, but some looks like the WB was off. 4,5, and 6 seem to be a bit off-color while the first ones are much better.

Nope. Lately, I haven't used AWB. I was using a custom white balance from one of the referee's white golf shirts.

The difference isn't the white balance, well, too a point. He changed location but didn't adjust enough for the different way the light was hitting them. I do the same thing...get wrapped up in shooting and forget ... or just miss the setting a bit being in hurry.

did you change the custom WB at any point? I like the look of the first shots, especially #3, as it looks very natural, but comparing to #4, the color greatly fluctuates.

Also, sorry for not seeing the fact you used custom WB in your first post. Apologies.

That's an interesting observation, Livin. Images 4-6 were shot from where I set the White Balance point. To me, the colors don't look like they're off enough to ruin the image.

Well I got my DSL back....whew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no pokey dialup now

Anyway, I really like numbers 1 and 4, those are the kind our paper runs (if I can get em.... ) LOL, but the others are very good too.

Hey, wanna shoot for me tomorrow night at a hs girls volleyball game? I sent my 1D in today for repairs....stuck with a DREBEL till it gets back in the next 2 to 6 weeks
The gym is a dungeon, no flash allowed...shoot from upper level to get a stop back from light off the floor.....
