    For want of a head...

For want of a head this would have been a pretty good photo.

I took this shot at an AHL hockey game last night. I was moderately zoomed in and following the action in the neutral zone when this collision occurred. Unfortunately, I clipped the guy's head right out of the frame when I took the shot. Don't know whether you've ever experienced the speed of a professional hockey game, but I consider myself lucky to have captured as much of the shot as I did. Perhaps I should try staying a little less zoomed in than I do.

    ISO 1250, 1/400sec, f/4.5 (I think), about 165mm or so. Comments?

Yeah, except for the head, I think this is great. Nice and sharp, good color. Of course it would be nice to see some faces, but I have the same problem in basketball - I always seem to be on the wrong side of the court.

What camera and lens was this taken with?

The only thing to do is shoot a little looser, or hone a reflex flick of the wrist on the zoom ring !!
You did well to get this much of the action, this sharp.
