    Volleyball

I just kind of liked these for the obvious reasons, just didn't need these for the paper so I thought I'd post them.

    #1: what an expression
#2: this kid is a freshman playing on varsity, smallest on the team but has more heart and talent than just about anyone in the school
#3: two down one to go in a sweep of a county rival.... she's not overconfident...just honest and rubbing it in

    Re: Volleyball

Really, I hadn't noticed.... lol Thats probably because I didn't do anything with them, and didn't set the camera for the gym, it plain bites in that place with aweful light and colors. You either get very dark photos or as in this case the yellow tint. In here you up the blues, but since I wasn't shooting but a few shots before heading out to do soccer I didn't bother changing the settings, it was easier to just PP the ones I sent the paper. The two the paper used look like they were taken at a different gym as the colors are right, whereas even being in the gym there is a color cast. and it's dark. I actualy get a headache shooting in there it's so bad. Part of the problem is the lights, part the colors of the walls, cieling and floor. Even the floor has a tint to it that just makes a mess. Next year they are supposed to redo the entire gym, with input by the staff photog and me. I basically told them to go to a particular school nearby and do what they did as they have the same school colors and best lighting around, not too mention a light colored floor whuch really makes a huge difference. The other school also pays less for electric and bulbs, which made the idea very pleasing to the schoolboard

    Re: Volleyball

I used to coach V-ball and I can tell you that when it is played at a high level (like it looks you saw) it is as exciting as they come. Almost like a constant overtime.

Lighting in Gyms kills me - as most of us I am sure - did you use strobes? If so, did you bounce (I saw white walls). Just curious as I will be joining a partner to shoot volleyball soon.

    Re: Volleyball

Nope, the IHSAA does not allow flash of any kind with volleyball as it's distracting to the players However if both coaches agree to it you can use it, in this case the home team was fine, the visitors were not. No flash at all here, and if I had used it there wouldn't be a yellow cast as it corrects the colors in this dingy joint.

good catch, know how the colors can be.
I shot in a old gym with horrible lights,
plus they painted one wall royal blue
and the other wall dark green.

No one ever said color coordinators were smart or thought of the affects to photography, and these are prime examples.....
